because they can and its helped boost their sales. Same reason M$M's advertises. though with the high costs you may see a decrease in pill ads and the FDA has been making it a bit more difficult to do such ads. |

Bottom line is always going to be money!! In order to advertise on tv or radio ads, they have to meet certain criteria, such as listing all side effects, they have to say "speak to your doctor about . . ." etc. But the all powerful dollar is behind the barrage of drug ads now. |

Several years ago, big pharma tried a new marketing strategy called direct to consumer. In the past, pharmaceutical sales reps would approach doctors directly and try to sell their products. Some doctors would buy and some would not. Those that would not buy would not even tell the patients that the drugs are available; they just write a prescription and send them to the pharmacy. Nowadays, companies realize that patients are more informed and market to them directly. The goal is that a patient with cardiovascular risks would specifically ask for a drug, say Vioxx instead of relying on the doctor to decide.
This marketing strategy is particularly effective for new drugs that do not offer any significant benefit over other, often generic, alternatives. |
