Why do so few firms advertise?
If you go through a supermarket, and look at all the different products, you'll only be able to remember advertising campaigns for a minority (I think). Why don't the other companies advertise? Even more confusing, why is it the more well-known companies who advertise the most? You'd think the lesser-known ones would need publicity MORE.

Freddie, thanks for your answer, but then how come hugely successful companies like Coca-Cola advertise so much?

I'm going to guess that you are not one of the people to whom this market (supermarket products) is directed.

Advertising for food products, especially on TV, is very carefully aimed at specific audiences during specific hours of the day: breakfast cereals run during cartoon time; household cleaning products during daytime drama; and usually, in the prime time hours, advertising by sponsors who have a clue just who is watching which show/network.

Instead of asking why the more well-known companies advertise the most, you might want to consider that the reason these companies are so well-known is BECAUSE THEY ADVERTISE THE MOST.

Hope this helps!

Well i was always led to understand that a good product will sell itself. Word of mouth being the best advertisement and the one that will make or break your reputation and fortune.

Companies only have to advertise products for two reasons,
(a) Because they are new or improved , or
(b) Because they cant get rid of them.

I hope that this answers your query

"Edit" With reference to your query i would refer you to answer (b) due to overstock possibly caused by greed the same reason for "Buy One Get One Free" offers.

A good product will sell itself! lol not if no one knows its out there. Advertising costs alot of money and the more well off companies such as coke and beer are the ones who can afford it.

Advertising has a role in the marketing mix, but it is not a panacea. For some industries/types of work (e.g. service sector businesses, consultancies, etc) it is actually one of the least effective methods of getting new business in through the front door.

It does have value where a product has essentially been commoditised, and so you just need to hit as many people as possible with a message.

But a lot of products are not commoditised. In those cases it may be better to use other methods which are more tightly focussed on your target audience. The only problem with that is you have to work at it, understand your product and understand your customer. Advertising on the other hand is lazy because you dont have to think, and can always blame the advertising vehicle or your advertising agency or advert designer rather than yourself if (and when) it fails to achieve strong results.

It's all about return on investment, sales go up every time an advertising campaign hits our TV, why do Sky and BT now go into every shopping centre on the face of the earth and sell sell sell? because there's always more money out there.

smart advertisers will pound that jingle or product into your head over and over and over for years - that's how they BRAND the item or product. Heinz Ketchup - Coca Cola - Dr Pepper - Kellogs cereals etc
Alot of other companies can't afford to do that so they do some online marketing and let the consumer determine the rest
