They don't - they prefer to have pictures, because the hit rate goes up (no pun intended, ok, well maybe a little).
If there were no avatars at all on Y!answers, the response rate would be lower - 70% of people are visual (20% auditory and 10% tactile) - so the more visual the better response.
Of course, many don't put up their own pictures - LOL - I heard of one grandmother who had her granddaughters photo on the site -worked until she had to meet one of the guys face to face - he told me he almost wet himself!
