Glor316 | Why do they film people off-center in testimonial commercials? |
Whenever they have like a "regular guy" talking about something that a product did for him, thay ALWAYS film it in one unbroken take and they are always off-center.
Is this to keep it visually interesting, or something subliminal?
It's so obvious once you pay attention to commercials.
It drives me NUTS! Additional Details MB you gotta be kidding me,
OK
In a "testimonial-style" commercial, they always have some people talking about how great Wal_mart, or Cialis, or anything is, but they always film them OFF-CENTER |

There could be a couple of reasons:
1) In photography, there is something called the rule of thirds. If you divide the camera frame into three parts, objects or people placed on the third lines will have a stronger visual impact. Objects at the meeting point of a horizontal and vertical third line have the strongest impact. You may find the faces of the people in the upper right or upper left focus point.
2) To give the impression that it is a candid interview, not a staged, scripted event. If you look at most candid interviews with celebrities or people on news programs like 60 Minutes, the subject is usually off-center. |

It is indeed to keep it visually interesting. Most programs, especially newscasts, have the character centre-shot. To keep your attention, commercials will try little tricks, like off-centre shots, or jittering camera. |

That's a good point...and YOU'RE RIGHT! Is it perhaps so we subliminaly place ourselves next to them,- or a Freudian slip....that it's not on the level? |

could u rephrase that differently please |

CaliforniaBear's second point is the primary reason. To elucidate, here's why. Off-center shots in testimonial ads help you believe that it is in fact a 'candid' one - and not cut n' dried to suit the advertiser's needs. A candid interview increases the prospect of the audience's belief in the testimonial. The more you think it is candid, the more you believe it is true. And the more you believe it's true, the greater the chance of you buying into that 'truth'. Given the endless barrage of incredulous ads we face today, simple well-shot testimonials (as boring as they might seem in comparison) do work.
Simply put, the 'candid' testimonial takes care of a major aspect of all advertising communication - "the reason to believe". But if they do drive you nuts... and you represent a growing statistic of consumers, rest assured we're in for creative calisthenics again. |
