www = World Wide Web
The term "World Wide Web" refers to all of the publicly accessible websites in the world, in addition to other information sources that web browsers can access. |

I don't. If you just type the name and ".com" after it, that site will be the first one that comes up. |

really, you don't always... www stands for: world wide web, which is a place on the internet backbone. try just typing in familyfun.com into your brower's address field, and you will find a web address that does not require www.... |

So that ur comp know what network its connecting to, simple but not, if u didnt have that it wud look 4 the web page on ur own comp lol
However, Modern browsers (IE, Firefox, Opra, etc.) know that ur connecting 2 the web so it puts it in there 4 u. So even if U dont type it, when u get 2 the site u will see it in the url |

world wide web... it's telling your computer you want to go on it... |

as someone said, and i think what you're asking, is that "www" tells your computer that where you want to go is the "world wide web" and not your hard drive and such, as internet explorer can explore your hard drive too. but i think like the first websites and internet explorers needed that distinction, and it stuck...hope that helps :D |

www means world wide web. In most websites you don't have to put it in, like apple.com or cnn.com. But there are some websites those require typing it in or it will not work. I don't have anything example in mind but I've been seeing them once in a while... I think it's because of their CNAME settings of their domain (not sure...) |

it's not really a requirement any more but http://yourwebsitehere.com used to be different than http://www.yourwebsitehere.com.....we're talking like 10 years ago though.
I've only come across one website where it didn't work in the past few years, but they changed their address so it's not an issue anymore. |
