When a customer purchases a product at Best Buy, the cashier will ask for a phone number. What do they do with that information?

Don't worry, I never give out my number unless it is absolutely necessary. This question is just to help with research I am doing. |

A: it is demographic and they use it to see where their customer base is
B: In the event of returns they can piece together your shopping history with them.
C: They can match up your number to your address and send you flyers or coupons.
By normal trade standards, that information is local use by THAT company only and isnt sold or shared. Feel free to report to their corperate offices if you believe you have ever been compromised. |

To get you on their mailing list. Just say no and they'll type in a dummy number. They will never refuse to sell anything to you if you refuse your phone number. You can always also make up a number. My husband worked for Babies R Us before he was called up on Active Duty and they did the same thing. |

They would probably tell you that it is so they can track where their customers are coming from. All they would really need is a zip code, which shouldn't be too personal of a question. Though who knows what they do with your phone number, I wouldn't give it to them, it isn't a requirement. |

They send your phone number to one of the alien space craft hovering above the earth. The aliens use it to tap into your brain when you talk on the phone, kind of like in the Matrix, and learn all about you. Bush has made a secret deal with the aliens to allow them to probe our brains like this so that the body snatchings that were so prevalent in the 80s have diminished completely, except for a few rogue alien terrorists. I am pretty sure that Cheney, Rumsfeld and Condi Rice are all in on it.
I try not to shop at best buy but when I do I give them the phone number of one of my enemies. I've seen secret memos from Cheney to Rumsfeld that talk about how safe the brain probe is for the American people but I don't want to take any chances. As you know, Bush is probably lying about that to trick us into going to Best Buy. He must have friends on the board of that company who contributed to his campaign.

This is so their marketing can track customers, not to mention junk mail and telemarketing to follow. I never give away free info like that, it's money in the bank for them! Just say you don't give it out for security reasons. Done. |

A lot of places ask for your number or your zip . They keep track of you purchases with you phone number and they keep track where a majority of the customers live with the zip code. I thought that was pretty cool whenI found out. When the opened a new Home Depot near buy I asked the girl there about that and she said that because at the other store a lot of people were putting down my zip code so they put a store right down the street. |

As an employee at one of these stores, we use the phone number for mainly one thing. the only time it asks for a phone number is when you purchase the Black Tie Protection or want to use your reward Zone number without the card. It is how the company calls up the information. In the event you have a defective product, they will mail or email you (your choice) on whats going on with your products. We do not sell or give this information to anyone. they are very stricht at the stores about handling customers information. I have seen employees fired for leaving a register for a quick minute with employees information up on it. You don't have to provide a phone number at all, just remember that though when you have a problem a with a product or need to return something and don't have the receipt anymore, this is how they find proof you purchased it at a Best Buy. This really does make things easier on both the customer and the employee helping you. |
