many things don't cost money. There has been barter trade for thousands of years and it still exists today and has become high tech. Barter is an effective way to keep the tax man from taking what isn't his. Often professionals will trade services. "I will give you four hours of massage for a new set of built in book shelves..."
Many things that DON'T cost money (yet) are taken for ganted. The very air you breathe which sustains your life is becoming a rare commodity. Clean air and clean water, mankind's birthright, has been taken away by greedy corporations, ineffective city planners, and over population. A beautiful sunset, the smell of fresh baked bread or a neighbor's barbequeue, or a tree in bloom in the spring... these are all still freely available and some of the best things in life. |

Paying for an award? Maybe you are talking about taxes. Yes, Uncle Sam requires that you pay him money if you win the lottery, a car, an even American Idol. There's no way out of it - besides jail maybe. However, if you are going to buy a car you have to pay taxes on that purchase anyhow. You might as well win one in a sweepstakes and just pay the taxes.
If you are asking about why we spend money on anything at all, it's because if we didn't than we would revert back to a bartering system. You wouldn't want that. It would be almost impossible to keep such a complex society as ours still chugging along by trying to figure out how many tooth fillings a dentist can provide to pay for his copy of Microsoft Word. You would probably have to say goodbye to most of the Internet, fast food, and yes - American Idol. |

if nothing costs money, not enough people would work and produce the necessary supplies like food, clothing, etc. They would have no motivation whatsoever. Eventually, we would begin to need money as an incentive to produce supplies. There would definitely be few luxuries in life. |
