Why french cars (renualt, opel) are not in american market?

spudric13
Because they suck and probably can't pass American safety standards.

Jonathan
its cuz french cars dont pass US emission tests n arent as reliable.

Renault was in the US market up until the 80s. Their cars sucked and they packed it in.

Opel is one of the brands of General Motors (think Cheverolet, Pontiac, here) that is for Europe (Vauxhall is another), so from that sense, they are 'here'.

united_kindgom_gurl
cuz the quilty sucks

While the above answers are cute, and almost funny, recall that GM and Ford and Chrysler cars sucked pretty bad back in the 80's too.

Safety and emmissions is also a non issue; the Euro standards are different in some specifics, and you can't take a car directly from here to there, but the differences aren't that big.

The real answer boils down to money. It takes a lot of cash to get a dealer network set up, and since the US car market is mature, you're going to have a hard time getting going here, it doesn't matter how good your quality is. People have their favorite brands established. Look at how long Hyundai has been selling decent quality low price cars, and they're still a marginal brand. Same with Kia and Daewoo.

If I'm a Euro brand CEO, I'm going to look to Africa, S.America, Mideast, Eastern Europe to grow my business; a lot less competition etc.

Perhaps due to quality issues. I owned a Renault Alliance once, and it was the worst car I'd ever driven.

Blah Blah Blah
I had a Renault and it was the worst car I ever owned. It was my first car and my Dad bought it for me for 100 dollars. I though it was a real deal. Boy, I was really wrong about that. Lasted me about 5 months.

Pancakes
The US's safety and emission standards are so high, some foreign car makers cannot sell here without expensive retrofitting.

nobody wants them.

Cause they only go in reverse?

Because when the car comes to a difficult turn in the road, it tends to go the other way.

hardbody
because they tend to lay down on you when you need them the most and the only time that they run is to run and hide

ronscott1951
Because they were built and designed by people that didn't want to comply with US standards, unlike Norton motorcycles, who was also French.

W.ill
1.) French cars have quality issues, and user scottbradentx explained the rest. 2.) because their quality always sucked, their reputation is already damaged BEFORE entering the market. 3) Americans like comfortable, large and powerful cars, which is the exact opposite of what the French build. BUT: 1) French cars have very low emissions, since they usually have tiny 1 litre 4 cylinder engines (V6 at best). 2) cornering/handling is the reason why AMERICAN cars can't compete in Europe, while European cars are considered great in America.
