To its purest basic function, marketing is a tool to essentially make the audience feel guilty - guilty for not having/using/supporting the product or service etc. so to appease that guilt or to prove that they are not as accused the audience buys into the advertisement.
Broken down examples:
humanitarian - showing the starving, uneducated, dying children and 'you can help by giving us money' puts the onus on the viewer which conveys a blame for allowing the suffering if the view does not donate (this model works for anything that needs saving: animals, trees, the planet, etc)
beauty products - are you ever going to look as good as a supermodel with a $500/hour professional make-up artist? no but you'll feel guilty for not trying
politics - they push the motto "if you're not with us you must be with THEM" - much like the humanitarian ads but it has more psychological manipulation |

Marketing is to promote a specific product. Basically, is to make money and make people buy what you are selling.
Some marketing companies hire people to do promotions, or they use billboard or the internet.

That's a really odd question and actually answers itself. Marketing is used to market a product, of course...
Imagine there was a product out there that you really wanted or could fix a problem you had etc but you didn't even know it existed! Marketing is used to promote loads of products. People won't buy them unless they know about them! |

Marketing is, simply, beinrging your prouct to market. You can have the best product or service in the world, but you'll never sell it or get any value from it if you don't market it. Marketing is the process of communicating to the market about your product (what it is, what is costs), and physically delivering your product to the market. |
