Branding is more than a logo or a slogan. Branding is the "promise" or expectation that a company builds in the mind of its customer. When you think about McDonald's or Starbucks or Sears Diehard Batteries, you have an expectation of what you believe that company or product is going to deliver - that is BRANDING.
Branding is powerful because it establishes an emotional or rational connection between the product/company and the customer. |

So that when people think of a particular item, they'll be more likely to think of THAT company. For example, when I think of "photo copier," I might first think of Xerox. When you think of "computer," what's the first thing you think of? Mac? Dell? ... Probably not Hewlett-Packard, right? That's because Apple/Mac and Dell spend a hell of a lot of money on branding.
One more example: In the summer, how often do you walk up to a small ice cream shop and ask for a Blizzard, only to realize it's not a Dairy Queen? (They all have some variation on the Blizzard.) That's because DQ has done an outstanding job of branding its Blizzard. |
