maybe Johnson doesn't want to spend the $$ like the big stores spend to place the advertisement....what do you think it's free to advertise? |

Because they're bigger, they can afford the advertising. |

They have to pay, and small grocery chains like to keep costs down effectively. You'd be surprised at how much advertising costs! |

because they have the money for it. |

I hate to answer a question with a question, but: You do realize that advertising isn't free, right? I would assume that those small independent grocers don't have the advertising budgets of those big chains. |

Well, it could be because the ads in newspapers cost too much. If the ad costs too much, then its not worth it for a small store to place the ad. Another reason could be that the newspaper doesn't want the ad in its paper. The newspaper can choose which ads go in the paper, and if the bigger supermarkets pay a lot of money to the newspaper so that the newspaper doesn't allow certain ads, the newspaper will most likely oblige. In other words, the reason certain supermarkets don't have ads in the paper is simply money. |

They can, but it costs money so a lot of times they don't. Instead of paying to have their fliers delivered; they choose to offer lower prices to their customers. There are plenty of small local grocery stores in my area that do advertise in the newspaper. |

Small stores just like Larger stores have the opportunity to advertise in the newspaper. However advertising takes $$$$, and the smaller mom and pop shops dont have giant corporations behind them or the extra cash to throw around on advertising. |

i work in the mailing industry and it costs thousands of dollars to advertise. word of mouth is the best advertisment anyone can use. |

As the other says, it's about the money. Those are ads, and they cost money. Any company (well, except for illegal activities) can advertise in newspapers. In fact, newspaper advertising has been declining, and I'm sure your newspaper would love an ad from Johnson Family Grocery. In fact, I'll bet a sales rep has been try to sell that company an ad for years. Just to verify that, go on down to Johnson Family Grocery and ask to speak to the owner. It's their decision not to advertise, not the newspaper's decision to keep their ads out.
Hope that helps. |

to advertise in a local paper is hugely expensive. My cousin owns a newspaper and he charges about £400 for 1 column by 1 cm as you can tell to advertise in a newspaper at a decent size is a fortune. |

because it's probably a self-owned and operated store and not a chain owned by a big company. |

Its because bigger name company's have more money and they pay to put their stuff in newspaper. |

i believe the ads cost money so the smaller ma and pa stores can't afford to advertise every week in the paper. |

It costs money to advertise in a newspaper or magazine, or to put a commercial on the TV. The smaller and 'less well known' stores can have better prices because they don't have a large advertising budget, and because you shop there, you 'know this' and shop there again, and perhaps tell your friends to shop there too, to get the lower prices. This is called 'word of mouth' advertising, and it works best for stores that need customers. The places that place large ads simply feel they'll get more customers than the 'money' it costs to place the ads. The newspapers themselves have nothing to do with choosing who advertises ... that is done by a 'separate' section of the business. A 'news story' is one thing, an advertisement is another ... and in the news business, 'never the twain shall meet.' |

they are in the paper in my area - but recall the stores PAY for adds so if they don't want to pay no add and it seems Jonsons don't NEED to |

they can he chooses not to spend the money on ads and probably uses word of mouth to sell his product. If he spends money on advertising the cost of his products will go up. |

He can have the same ad if he's willing to pay the price. The ad's are probably expensive so only the grocery stores willing to pay the price ad's are in the paper |

Maybe because the adds are too expensive? I don't really know... I've never really noticed that before. Good point! |

I wouldn't say that at all... how else would "ROGA'S SUPA DOLLA" get an ad - that is ALWAYS on the front page pf the paper with all their sales??? Weird name and all - but great prices and fresh meat! |
|

AK kiddo!

They can, but chances are their doing well and putting a add in the newspaper is not cheap, so they just make do without. |

advertising costs are too high for smal grocery stores especially if they are not a franchise..!! they would be termed as small businesses and they dont generate enough revenue to afford advertising or to even budget for weekly advertising in the papers..
on the other hand, if they do generate enough revenue and profits, they may just want it to be word of mouth advertising..!! |
|

It's not that they can't, more than likely they choose not to. It costs money to put an advertisement in the paper. Maybe they feel like they don't need to because they get enough business. |

Companies don't "get to" advertise, they *pay* to advertise. The smaller stores probably don't have the money in their budgets to purchase a big advertising circular in the paper like the larger chain stores do.
Either that or, since you say the smaller market already gets as many customers as the big store does, maybe they've decided they don't NEED to advertise in the paper. |
