Why isnt my Hawaii jewelry website getting sales?
Hello
I own a Hawaiian Jewelry website (www.HonoluluGold.com) and at Christmas I get about 8 sales a month, and during non Christmas times (January to October) only 2 to 3 sales a month. I did the whole SEO thing and such and I think my prices arent that bad but I still dont know why customers arent buying. This is my 2nd year doing it and I tried postcard advertising, link exchanges, SEO and still am not seeing the results that I want. (10 to 20 sales a month) Is this just a time thing that I have to keep advertizing? Is it my selection? Prices? I am in my 2nd year and am really lost on why I am not getting sales.

Any suggestions of help will be really appreciated,
Thank you

I did go to your web site and looked around. My first thought is your name. I don't think of Hawaii and gold as a combination. My first thought is Hawiian gold???? I didn't know there was gold in Hawaii. It just sounds like Black Hills Gold, Colorado Gold....places that really did have gold. Maybe that's stupid, but that's what I thought.

Next I found that most of the stuff I was looking at was silver. That didn't make much sense.

Third, I hate it when I go to a web site and there are categories, but the categories don't come up. For example there is one item listed in specials. But click on specials and nothing appears. If you have a category...have something in it. And, if you have a specials category...I expect to find a bargain.

Fourth...you are selling by photo...but your photos don't get very big. I was interested in the turtles. I enjoyed reading the about you info and you mention the turtles. I clicked on some earings....turtle sterling silver posts, but I couldn't make out what they were in the photo. (especially the one on the right)
I did enlarge two sizes....but I needed bigger or better so I could really see what they looked like.
That wasn't the only photo I thought needed more. Maybe add a way to click on a set of two or four angles so people can really see them.

I loved your information about the pieces...like the whale tail and how they are around the islands etc. I really liked that piece by the way.
Another thought I had was that I wish I knew what it looked like when it was on. ( I don't know if you can get a pretty girl like on the opening of Hawaii 5-0 to model some!! :)

Oh...and the quotes from people I don't read, don't care about because I know you won't put "I really hated my neckless" up there....but I found it cluttery.

I really think the problem is that you are trying to sell in a market that I wouldn't have thought about for jewlery. I don't think of Hawaiian items as presents here in the mountains of Colorado. While I loved the Whale tail...who do I have to give that to?

I appreciate your desire to spread the beauty of the islands throughout the world, but I think you need to target an audience better. You are actually after the tourists who come to the islands and need a beautiful reminder of their visits. I would think you would want your adds going onto web pages that deal with Hawaiian cruises and airline flights.
"take the beauty of Hawaii home with you"....visit Hononlulu Gold for golden memories of the Islands.

Also...I know this is stupid too....but honolulu isn't easy for us guys with the money to spell....so we will go somewhere else for our gifts for the ladies cause we can't spell the name.

Anyway...I don't want to be all downer....I think there is a lot there, but you need better photo's, better marketing targets. By the way...the prices were fine to me.

Are you getting any traffic and that traffic converting to sales or is it leaving right away or in the shopping cart.

If you are not getting traffic you will have to use Google Adwords. Adwords will get traffic to your site quickly. It also give you good info of what keywords to use for SEO. I have a feeling the keywords you used in SEO were not the what people are using or looking for. When you start Adwords, install Google Analytics and you will be able track your traffic and see what is happening. You can see where it is coming from and if your SEO is working. You can see if people shop around for 5 or 10 pages or leave immediately. You can also see where people drop out, especially in the shopping cart and checkout. You may have a problem in your checkout. I have seen up to 99% of people in checkout leaving, due to glitches or trust issues. Having people log in before seeing the final price is often the problem.

You do not have a phone number listed anywhere on your site. I would not buy from a site without an 800 number. It is best to have it prominantly listed on each page with your hours.

Regarding SEO, Google is not showing any of your links and your page rank is 2, which is poor. If you paid for SEO or did it yourself, it was done poorly. Link exchanges are worthless. Only inbound links from high page rank sites are good. Your dynamic URLs don't help. There are programs that change a garbled URL to one that you can optimize for search with keywords. Your product pages are not optimized with title tags and I don't see any metatags anywhere. Good luck.

Had a quick look at your website and I think one of the main problems is that your jewelry designs are not particularly unique enough to differentiate them from any other jewelry available in a local shop that someone can walk into, in any country.

When it comes to jewelry many people want to see it using their own eyes and touch and feel the product. I live in Hong Kong and there are so many jewelry shops with thousands of designs. There is just no need to go to a website to buy products that are so readily and easily available.

And jewelry isn't an easy market to break into at the best of times and certainly not if your only sales channel is the web.

I attended a trade only jewerly exhibition in Hong Kong a few years ago and it was so large it needed to be held in two separate venues. That is what you're up against.

One thing you can do is further develop the theme of Hawaii on your website, tell us about your design in more detail and create a stylish lifestyle image around your products. Because at the moment it all just looks like and feels like sales blurb.

Unfortunately, I still feel you're going to have problems increasing sales and may have to rethink your products, marketing approach and sales channels.

If you are intent on the Hawaiian theme in your jewelry then maybe you should go into the niche fashion jewelry business (as opposed to the bulk mass produced jewelry trade) and design more elaborate and extravagant unique designs that may be used in film, television, advertising, stage, fashion, photography, catwalk. The mass jewelry business is too cut throat for you at the moment. Go for a niche area first and expand later. You need to build a well known brand name for yourself before you can conquer the mass market and that's who you are competing against with your current product line.

(Wow, there are a lot of post after my one that are more intent on advertising their own businesses and drumming up business for themselves than offering advice to you.... beware!)

Here are my suggestions.
1. Redesign website such as color scheme, layout, usability.
2. Determine your target audience, and market your items through them.
3. Research your competition and see what they are doing.
4. Optimize your website for your visitors and for search engines.

If you would like a full analysis report on your website, please contact me at http://www.azurebutterflydesign.com

I went to your website and the first thing I noticed is the problem I had reading it due to the color scheme. That gold font sure is pretty, but I have to strain my eyes to see what you're selling.

Another thing is that everything could be a bit bigger. You have everything just a shade too small so it's difficult to see exactly what the product is without clicking the link. People like me don't want to have to make umpteen different clicks to get to see the product. Basically, we're lazy.

Also, what search engines have you advertised on? Yahoo? Google? Where? I tried to do a search for your site on Yahoo and couldn't find it. If people can't find you, they won't come.

At least you have a Google page rank 2.

However while meta tags aren't as important anymore you don't have any meta keywords or a meta description, and you also dont have any h1 or h2 tags.

Sure you have 35 inbound links but most are from crochetnmore.com. Is that really the jewelry buying crowd?

Your site doesn't really rank well for what I percieved your keywords to be, but you have a few other comments here that cover that quite well.

I would love to hear how you turned the site around and increased sales.

Vica
Wow! your jewelry sure is nice, but the website doesn't do it any justice. You should try getting a more professional looking website, and definitely make the pictures bigger so that we can see the details. It's a shame you're not having more sales because your jewelry is very attractive (just re-do the site). Good luck!

Just goes to prove that 'half baked knowledge can do you more harm' - You have lost time and also spent many futile manhours doing SEO stuff, which you could have probably spent better on your business.

Here is what you may need to do
1. Install Analytics and see how users are interacting with your site. If you are doing some sales then chances are you are getting many visitors but they are simple not converting to customers.
2. Results from Analytics, will translate into Design Changes and Landing Page changes.
3. Run a short duration PPC campaign to get some visitors and through the Analytics again test your assumptions and changes. You will also get an authoritative list of performing kewyords for your SEO campaign.
4. Repeat step 3 for optimal results.
5. Simultaensouly outsource SEO to a SEO Company

Please bear in mind:
1. Jewellery sites are highly competitive when it comes to both SEO and PPC competition for ranking.
2. Remember every industry has large competitors who spend thousands of dollars in emarketing & SEO initiatives. SO essentialy you are competing against them for your site to rank for that top SE listing.
3. 'Build it an they will come' - NEVER. You have to constantly work on your website, market it, and most importantly test, test, test - At the end of the day etailing and emarketing are still the lowest cost option when compared to the 'bricks and mortar' business costs.
4. Once your site gets top ranking even trash sells! And, if you look around you will see millions of e.g. So sales is only a matter of good SEO and internet marketing strategy.

You may also want to plant stories about your website to some shopping/fashion/model discussion forums - You wil be surprised at the spike in web traffic - But a word of caution here - You need to cleverly disguise the messages as to be some sort of informative message rather than a pure advrtising spiel. Moderators and forum contributors will make sure your posting is removed if they see the message as pure advertising.

Good luck with your efforts.

Well, I dont know what you thought "SEO" was but you did not do SEO. I can tell right away about 10 things you have wrong with your site in relation to SEO. If you paid someone to do it, you got had.

Why does your site go to https? Not at the homepage it shouldnt. Only to your checkout. Nobody links into "https://www.domain.com", so that needs to be fixed.

Postcards Ads? Who do you send the postcards to? Direct mail is both expensive and requires A LOT of continued effort. 1 mailing isn't enough and you need to have STRICT control over your mailing list. I've never bought anything off of a postcard ad - not even target ads about SEO or marketing.

Link exchanges are just that - exchanges. They don't bring traffic. They link to you, you link to them. Period. That doesn't mean traffic at all. Think of it like this: if you are linking to them, and you get no traffic - how is it fair for them to link to you and THEY bring all the traffic? So, link exchanges don't mean traffic. And if you think link exchanges help with SEO, you are mistaken. Engines hate link exchanges.

I looked at your competitors and they all had similar lackluster designs, in my opinion. But the difference is that they rank searches for "hawaiian jewelry" and you don't - so they are probably getting good traffic and sales.

If you want to do this right, you need to fix your site first. Then, do Pay Per Click advertising. Then advertise your sites on other places where people might be looking for jewelry. Then you might want to look for bloggers who like to blog about "neat" stuff for women. Shopping blogs - usually run by women for women.

Finally, you'll want to find and invest in a good SEO campaign. If you want to really make this business work, you have no choice.

vicseo
You do not have SEO metatags in place. Where's the <description> and <keywords> metatags? Unfortunately, your <title> contains spamdexed/duplicate entries which lower your page ranking on Google and Yahoo search directories. Why is the keyword "jewelry" repeated three times when once is enough? The following article is offered to improve your understanding of SEO.

The most effective way to advertise on the Internet is
to first set up a website and publish its domain name
on major search directories such as Google.com,
Yahoo.com [at http://www.google.com/addurl/?...... and
MSN.com since 85% of Internet shoppers rely on these
search directories to provide them with goods and
services. In a sense, these search directories are a
very large Internet Yellow Pages.

Nevertheless, should your website or opening webpage
fail to contain "generic" keywords, then anyone using
such "generic" queries will not be able to discover
your website. Your domain name [URL] of your website,
in a sense, will be invisible, undiscoverable.

You may want to consider some simple algorithms which,
when observed and committed in designing of a website
with placement of various critical metatags that can
surely achieve a high search engine presence and
increase Internet traffic to your website. These
metatag strategies work well with published webpages
at Google and Yahoo.

Design: Should you create an extensive Flash-based
website, make sure to fill-in the property entries
such as the Title, Description and Keywords. Failing
to do so, leaves no hard HTML or ALT resource that can
be readily indexed by search robots. Also consider the
Internet audience and their incoming setup. For
example, if they are on analog/dialup, Flash webpages
take too long to load up and therefore analog users
will likely lose interest and discontinue entering the
Flash site. On the other hand, anyone on hi-speed DSL
lines, will welcome Flash pages which load quickly. So
before designing a pure Flash websitge, ask the simple
question, "Who's my end user - is he on dialup or
DSL?" And if you had to choose between these two users
for maximum marketability, then select analog users
since 80% of most resident users are still analog
Internet subscribers and pure HTML designed webpages
is best for them.

A non-Flash-based website which relies on hard text,
is far easier to be indexed by search robots. Limit
the use of stylized text saved as .gifs since as a
graphic, they are not indexable by search robots.

Avoid use of frames since any number of search robots
are unable to properly classify textual material.

Placement of Metatags:

A ranking or search order does take place with Google
and Yahoo and it begins with the "Title" metag which
should consist of no more than 65 characters separated
by commas. The "Title" should describe in generic
terms, the goods and services, followed by a location
from which the resource is located, i.e., city, state.
The placement of a domain name which is not generic
within the "Title" is not appropriate, unless your
domain name is a major recognizable brand name.

The second metatag is the "Description" which is
usually 41 words to form a complete sentence which
best describes one's goods and services.

And the very last category - "Keywords" are also
somewhat limited to 15-16 words which can be plural
and compound in nature. Again, avoid multiple entries
which could be mistaken as "spamdexed entries" which
is defined as the loading, and submission of
repetitive words into a particular metatag category.
"Spamdexing" when discovered on a webpage and reported
to Google's spamreport.com can result in the
elimination of your website from their search
directory.

Good luck!
