Why would you use the newspaper for advertisement?

It really depends on your product or service and the target market you are reaching. I have posted an ad and got not much response and another one and got heaps.

One thing I recommend that can really make a difference- pay a little extra to have your ad professionally written and designed.

It also depends on your budget. Often print advertising is good for branding and generating awareness rather than sales. I undertook a six week campaign in one particular widely read local newpaper in Brisbane. Quite large ads. I got three enquiries. However, I noticed after that that there was a greater awareness of my company name and people were more open. Direct approaches I made to people were easier to turn into sales. Because they had heard of me and spending the money and having my name in print gave me credibility. I actually think this is the major reason for print advertising- and where it is most effective.

Now, it is difficult to say how effective that campaign was and how many extra sales I got. There is an old saying: "50% of my advertising budget is wasted, I am just not sure which 50%".

This brings me to a final point. Depending on your business and what it is, you might be best focusing your advertising budget online as it it is extremely measurable and generally can do more for less. As you have the budget, you can then back this up with targeted print advertising.

Because so many people read the newspaper. Also it is relatively cheap to place an ad.

Readers will see your ad while waiting in the doctor's office or waiting at a red light. They will read it sitting on the metro on the way home from work,

Each person who reads the newspaper can view the ad so there are more people that become aware of the company/product you are advertising.

Lets say you have a business. If you post it on the internet, it may not reach as many people in your area because everyone may prefer a different site. But if you put it in the local paper, you are exposing your ad to ALL the readers.

Same with radio and tv: does your target market listen/watch to that particular station? If not, you wasted airtime and $$$.

Newspapers provide a sense of importance, a sense of trust.

Once again, it is about targeting.

Newspapers can run an ad by zip code, they can run entire DMAs, you can poly-bag, they like to give the web as value added.

Targeting and local value.

And newspaper has a very high reach building potential, but from the studies I have seen lately there is very low ad recall associated with the medium.
