just say that you would like to further develop your customer service skills

Well, because I believe I have the potential to do great in this field of work, and if I get the job I will work hard to place calls to people (or whatever you do at the call center place).

why are you asking others?

Most often this question means nothing. It is just another question they can ask to flush out an otherwise minimalist application process.
Different people want different things when seeking a job. Some just want a paycheck. Others want a way to kill some time. Some are seeking careers, and others are seeking to grow their resumes. They are going to hire you no matter what. The turnover rate at call centers is abnormally large. They generally are looking for "monkeys" who can sit in a chair and do what they are told all day and not flip out. If you say i need a job, your in. They are not looking for overachievers at call centers.
Please do not go to work there. The world hates people who work at call centers and you will likely grow depressed and unhappy. This is your life! Go make something wonderful of it. It our only one.
Besides, the highest you could rise to at a call center is like a supervisor and that means you take every horrible call there is and you train people all day and work like 5 times as hard as everyone else. They never take management from a call center. ever. They move managers into call centers.
Ask them what the highest paid person in the department makes? Ask them what they are looking for in an employee? Ask them how the manage employee dissatisfaction and burnout. Bring up that it is the most hated field that currently exists and what have they done to insentifize people into swelling their ranks? Ask them How many of their phone operators move into a supervisory role withen 6mo. Ask them what is the median employment length for an entry level operator at their company. Tell them you are looking to start at double what they are paying operators and if the interviewer knows a more effective avenue of approaching that position is?
There you go! You are on your way to owning that place.
