For example, if you created a financial website, and it gets 1,000 inbound links from Yahoo! Finance, will that increase the chances of your website appearing in a Google or Yahoo! search? |

Yes but not if all the inbound links are the same. Hence from your example if all the links were www.my-finance-website.com then they would not count as much as say for an article on Guarantor Mortgages you had a link to your site content which was www.my-finance-website.com/Guarantor-Mor...
You see then the Search Engines would equate your site with that specific Keyword Phrase more than if you had 1,000 inbound links. So if someone did a Search for the phrase Guarantor Mortgages you would rank highly for it because the Search Engines would know you had quality content for that phrase due to the inbound link for a site with a high Page Rank.
Otherwise you won't see a huge amount of benefit except from people reading about you on Yahoo Finance who then follow your link to your site. |

That will in deed help your ranking, Google gives points based on relevancy of the backlinks. So the more relevant of a site to yours that I site is the better ranking you will have.
Now one more thing to look at is the ranking of the sites linking back to you. You also have to consider what the rank of those sites are, as if you have 12 rank 1 sites and one rank 6 site linking to yours, then you will have a lower page rank due to the low rank of the rank 1 sites.

If you have a lot of links from the same domain pointing to your site, search engines often devalue each individual link.
They might ignore the links almost entirely, if there is a link to your site on every page at the same location of the page. A link in the footer is a classic example. Those areas of a page that repeat over and over again are so called "boiler plates".
If I would be offered links on only a few pages but are embedded within the pages content versus a link in the footer from every page of the site, I would go for the few links rather than the footer link. |

It will help some, but the links need to come from different domains and different class c IP addresses and need to be from related sites. |

Having many Inbound links from the same site will only help you marginally. You can read more info. on this subject from Google itself.

It is basically common knowledge from many legitimate sources, including my own experience, that many inbound links from high ranking, or authority Sites are the ticket.

It depends. The site linking to you should be relevant in terms of same subject. Still so many links from one site will be subject to scrutiny as spam!! |
