Killed themselves? No. Got jobs that were an actual benefit to society! Absolutely.

The purpose that they have is to make us think we have to have what ever it is that they are hawking on any particular day.

lynn
They have the same right to exist as you do.

You would have to pay to access this site. You would have to pay the networks for TV programming (beyond what you pay your cable provider).

I hope not. I always thought I'd do well in advertising. I'm an idea person. Maybe we should only lose most of them.

Most people might find advertising to be irritating and annoying, but that's simply how the capitalist system works. In order to get customers to buy your product, you need to get the word out that you exist. For example, I love Fizzy Lizzy sodas because they are all natural without artificial flavoring and corn syrup, all there is to it is simply juice concentrate and carbonated water. It's healthy and great, but no one really knows about it because it doesn't have big advertising dollars to get in your face to tell you about it on TV. You can always say that businesses WILL get notice and attract customers by the word of mouth, which is some way is a small form of advertising, but many times the word of mouth is simply not enough especially if it's a small product or restaurant in this big competitive market. For example, the health food store I worked at barely have ANY customers because practically nobody knows about it, so it doesn't stand out among the competitors. You can say that we're not all affected by advertising, I mean seeing a pepsi ad dozen times per day isn't going to make me buy it because it's artificial and I'm not crazy about the taste. However, if someone else feels like drinking some junk, they'd probably pick Cocacola or Pepsi over imitation Coke ABC (unless Coke ABC has nice packaging or is organic, but that's also a form of marketing). So in some way we're all affected by marketing whether we want to or not. Let's say you've invented a nice fizzy drink that you want to sell to other people, but the product isn't going to just sell itself if most people don't know about it. You might get some customers because your friends told your other friends what a great drink it is, but your friend's friend's friend's friend probably won't buy it. So even if you have this great drink, it probably won't get out of your local circle. You'll end up spending more money to make this fizzy drink than you earn, or maybe your profit will be very small, if you don't get a bigger audience to purchase them. And in the end, you'll probably go out of production. However, if you live in a communist country then you don't get as much advertising and marketing, since soda A might be the only soda you're getting and soda A has no competition since there's no private enterprise. No one's about to start soda B anytime soon in this communist country because the person with the idea to create soda B isn't going personally benefit from the profits of soda B. Not saying that the communist system is an EVIL system or anything in this specific manner... it just stifles creativity and innovation. Hope this explains the reason and purpose of advertising and marketing :)

It would be tough deciding what you really wanted and needed in life then! So no. =)

Don't blame the people, blame the system...

How did you find out about Yahoo Answers? What compelled you to start using it? Marketing.

What you don't realize is everything that you do is somehow driven by marketing and advertising, whether you like it or not. If you really can't deal with it, then go live out in the wilderness or on an island somewhere - no TV, no radio, no MP3 player, no car, and no store-bought food.

I challenge you to read the book the "E myth"

(e stands for entrepenuer by the way)

You will discover that every business owner in the world..is actually IN the marketing business.

Something that may not have occurred to you, but there is only one business that exists on the entire planet...that is the business of "Getting and keeping customers"

that is the ONLY purpose for business to exist...The reason why most small businesses fail is because their owners mistakenly believe they are in the coffee business....cookie making business...or whatever other widget they have.

They are all dead wrong.

If you are a master at getting and keeping customers...it doesn't matter what the frick you sell

"Marketing" is the art and science of "Getting and Keeping Customers" and therefore is the most important skill and activity any business owner should be engaged in.

I noticed you lumped advertising in the same sentence with marketing...when in reality they are two separate processes entirely...Advertising is just one way to "do" marketing

Business cards...word of mouth....outstanding customer service....its all marketing.

I think your beef is specifically with advertising...and yeah...alot of it is obnoxious. I agree.

another thing you have to realize...most of the advertising you are exposed to was created by the business owner...or one of his employees...and I gauarantee you..they don't know what they are doing.

That is the very reason why direct mail, for example generally gets 2% response...yet research shows that 99% of post cards get read, and 73% of envelopes get opened.

its because they create cheezy crap that annoys us.

So in actuallity...the answer to the problem is not ..."they should all die"...it should be...."they should all get their heads out of their butts and learn how to be EFFECTIVE at marketing...not obnoxious at it.

I happen to be a marketing professional...and people pay me alot of money to "fix" their cheezy crap.

want to know why they keep paying me over and over?....because I make a significant difference in the success of their business.

I accomplish that by teaching them how to communicate with their customers and adapt their wants and needs into product and procedure. I teach them that knock their socks off-customer service is their most important daily goal.

...oh yeah...and we purchase some advertising here and there.

The country needs more marketing, not less.

I think that this is a completely retarded question. You would have to pay for just about everything if advertising didn't provide income for certain businesses to run free for customers. And how would you expect to learn about new products that enter the market. I don't think they are greedy. Some things just cost money, and you have to find a way to pay for them. Deal with it...if you don't like the choices people make for their careers, do something else, but you should never suggest people killing themselves. You are a dumbass...

Bre
no. i'm in sales and my career is greatly helped by people who see my company's ads. our society depends on advertising and marketing, without it i think our economy would suffer.
