I have made a piece of software that's of specific use and interest to photographers.
I'm selling it for £10 a copy on CDRom.
I want to make the wider photographic community aware of this programme.
I've found that there are around 900 camera clubs and photographic societies in the UK.
Now, obviously, if I was to send out a bulk mass mailing email to all of these, I'd be guilty of spamming and would quite rightly have the book thrown at me.
But, if I were to spend the next week sending out 900 individual emails, each one addressed directly to the chairperson of each club, mentioning them by name in my salutation (Dear Mr wotsisname), and mentioning the name of the society in the email, it would make the email feel a lot more personal.
Problem is, I can't decide in my own mind if this would still be regarded as spam, or if it would be an acceptable way of doing things.
I'd appreciate any thoughts on the matter.

Any email produced in 'mass' is considered spam, even though it would be great and save time and money. I was listening to a training call not long ago given by a very well known and successful editor, published author, and famous marketing maniac. He said that sending out emails or typed letters are not going to get the attention as much as something handwritten anymore.
I know that is a lot of work and postage, but he also suggested that you only try to write about 20 a day. He had a good point though. We all get 'spam' and we all get those form letters in the postal box. Someone is more apt to actually read your information when it is hand written. That doesn't mean it won't get tossed like any other means of presenting the information, just means it might actually get read.
~just an idea, but I definately vote against mass email. Plus the fact you don't know how many of them will automatically drop into that person's 'bulk' folder.
Also, if you do decide to write letters, you need to follow up to see if they received the information.

Sending unsolicited emails is likely to annoy people as much as if you had sent your advertisment by Royal Mail, and likely to be just as quickly junked unread.
Why not put an advertisment in one of the national magazines. There are a couple that deal with Digital Photography.
These are read by every keen and serious photographer and you won't be putting anyone's back up either.
Also, why not send a review copy to the editor and ask them to do a review. If they like it and the review is published then you'll have excellent advertising (free). |
