Would you advertise something you didn't believe in for money?
I wouldn't.

It clearly depends on the product - if it's immoral or illegal then definately no. If it is pink handbags or seventies plaid golf pants then conventional business wisdom says 'love the profit not the product'.

Depends on the product. For example, I could promote a certain potato chip, even if it wasn't my favorite chip. However, I wouldn't promote a weight loss gimmick that was just a means of making money at the expense of other people. If its preference based, ie food, clothing, or automobiles I would have no problem.

Nope. There is only one thing you can truly call your own in this life, YOUR REPUTATION. That's why on my Websites, I will not work with cheesy affiliates, or porn or get rich schemes. Pimpin' product may work for a little bit, but not in the long run. Market quality products and services and you will stay in biz a long time, without much prospecting, people know you got "the goods" and will come back.
If you Market crap, you will constantly have to look for "new crap" to market, and ALWAYS have to look for "New People" to market your "Next New Miracle Crap" to .
That's just me anyway...

It has a lot to do with your ethics. Some people don't have any so they wouldn't care. I would feel guilty If I did that.

It depends on a lot of factors, the first of which being what exactly you mean by advertising. If by advertising you mean creating an advertising campaign for a product or service you don't necessarily agree with, then it would probably be in your best interest. In businness, you can't make things too personal. Remember, this is your job, and the reason you have a job is to make money to survive. There are of course extreme circumstances in which your actions should reflect personal opinions and beliefs. An example would be advertising a product that does not at all deliver on its promises *cough*Head On*cough*, or something illegal.
However, if you personally are not creating an advertising campaign, but instead attributing your likeness or that of your company to an immoral product or service, your actions should be different. Many business partners and customers will take these actions into consideration when making decisions concerning your company or person. Likewise, associating your company or self with something often regarded as positive, can bring good PR and respect.

I had this very discussion with my marketing professor at university 30 years ago. I refused to promote a product that I didn't believe in. After arguing with me in front of the entire classs for 3 hours, as soon as the bell rang, he said, "By the way, I agree with you!".

(I could have killed him.) ;-)

dil
only NFP's would advertise not for money. but there also they expect ppl to contribute to them. so i think everybody advertise for money

Suppose you were part of a legal team hired to defend a former criminal. Whether or not you believe them is not issue. You were retained and are paid to do a job. You don't have a choice in the matter. You simply must uphold the law.
Think of advertising in the same way. You are paid to market a product. You can't play judge and jury on whether the product is worthy. Many seemingly bad products at the time turned out to be huge sellers in the marketplace. For example, the "pet rock, mood rings, cabbage patch dolls, and bell-bottom jeans." Each company was told they would fail because somneone thought they were a terrible idea. It's like trying to pick a movie or song that will make money.
I should know. I was in advertising for 35 years and didn't always agree with my clients, but I did what I could in their best interest.
And no, it's not "selling out." It's being a good business person.

It totally depends upon the situation. Actually there are so many things where an organization advertise not for money but for some other reasons...
Like you can see the advertisements againsts some deases..
or it may be related to literay in poor people...
Also there are so many other things likewise.

Roxy
Certainly not. I used to run a marketing company and I specified on my website that I would only uundertake work that I considered to be of an ethical nature. I've also specified certain 'opt-outs' for freelance work that I wouldn't consider, which includes certain political parties and arms/drugs manufacturers.

I think it's important to have beliefs and values and to try and live your life by those, hopefully for the betterment of all of us, in the long run.

Ojos Azul Claro
I would not. Where have all the morals gone? Good on you Doctress Who for sticking to your principles.

sachkehtahu
i never know what ads are there on my page,so there is no question of ethics for me.

Princess
well yes i would

somebody's rubbish is somebody's gold

Surely not. There are millions of good products and services that you can easily believe in. You do not have to lower yourself to advertise something you are against.
