I have found that when I want to do research on a serious topic Google is usually always better. Yahoo is good for things like entertainment and just kinda looking around the web. Google seems to have more websites in their first few web pages that are scholarly and better to use if doing like school work and so on. I use Yahoo mainly for fun and things like that.

Unfortunately, Yahoo and Google have their problems. For example:
A. Yahoo charges an unreasonable fee for review of pre-publication of a domain name, unless you go thru their backdoor freebie "submit a URL" option; their Adsense and PPC programs are subject to major abuse which results in advertisers paying out illegal charges by so-called mystery clickers who have no desire to legitimately visit a sponsored site.
B. Google has created and expanded a set of search engine algorithms that prevent small enterprises from advancing their website up the chain of PR. As a consequence, only large budgeted corporate websites have obtained high webpage rankings all under the guise that the algorithms are fairly set up to permit a fair SEO playing field. And finally, their stock offering represents a highly inflated value for Google which when examined closely, are artificially bolstered by manipulated traders and stock brokerages.
So, is there a better set of search engines? Try Ask Jeeves or Dog Pile.
Good luck!
