People can not live w/out oxygen, oxygen is created by photosynthesis in plants, and photosynthesis is the bi product of sun and water entering a plant.
Therefore, with out the sun, there would be no live on earth. This is a scientific fact. It doesnt get much more real than that.
There was no oxygen in the earths atmosphere until photosynthesis began (about 4-5 billion years ago), this is when life forms began on earth (coincidence? i think not) |

Factors that favor the sun as essential to the origin of life on Earth:
1. A Sun of moderate size with stable, steady radiation output allows for predictible lifecycles, variety of evolutionary characteristics, and reliable renewal of energy.
2. Nearly circular orbit at a uniform distance from the sun creates a better chance for atmospheric envelopment, seasonal alterations that allow for global conservation of resources, and reduced risk of anamolous radiological events.

4. Abundant H20: good solvent, stable over a wide temperature range and causes erosion of rock important in the atmospheric and aquatic accumulations of "heavy" molecules. Again, hydrogen and oxygen build life and originate from the Sun.
5. The abundant hydrogen at our planet's outset. Its loss and subsequent accumulation of other atmospheric elements allowed the early reducing atmosphere under which life originated.
6. Plant life relies on the sun for photosynthesis, the building block to every food chain above vegetation and a key reciprocal relationship in many cycles below the vegetative food level (i.e. shelter, nesting, hives)
7. Higher levels of life complexity relies on the Sun for diurnal, circadian, and seasonal patterns directly attributal to the Sun. |

The Sun,
Its benefits are out of this world.
It helps build strong bones by synthesizing vitamin D in the skin, a necessary nutrient in the absorption of calcium. It helps plants make oxygen while they photosynthesize the light.
But probably one of its biggest benefits, it provides a source of income for scientists who are in the dark over the issue of whether photons are waves or particles or both.
With out science, who knows, we might still be in the dark ages.
I have to say, you have a great question. I am sure there are more and even better answers.

No matter what the movies tell you, you aren't going to find some hapless sap to do your work for you in the real world, then get promoted to run the company.
