21 is prounounced as twenty one , so in 31,41,51 etc but why 11 is eleven and not onetyone?
English sometimes is a funny language..C U T is pronounced as cut while P U T is prounounced as put..!!!!

It wouldn't be onety, because there is no number onety. There is a number twenty. It would be ten-one. What I find more interesting is why it isn't oneteen and twoteen.

You just reminded me of when I was teaching my first born to count. She would say...1,2,3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 8,9 10, eleventeen, twelveteen, thirteen....She was only three but I would always get tickled. English is weird that is for sure. We have so many different rules but there are always also so many exceptions to the rules.

you made me realise that we study something without knowing its real meaning.indeed it is confusing, thanks for your question.i got to learn something today

Good question. Guess we'll have to thank the English language for that! There are soo many examples of it, too.
I can't even imagine how hard of a language it must be to learn, once you've progressed past the age of 6 or 7 anyways. I give a lot of credit to those of us whose 1st language isn't English but keep on trying anyhow- I know French was enough to drive me batty with all of the conjugations and all- and I was still of an age considered to be "satitisfactory" with regards to absorbing a new language- I flopped good and hard at 13!

Cool.. your question sounds like it could be about a silly new urban slang they have going around.

alohaforever16
English is one of the hardest language to learn... It is true!! because of all the consonants, the vowels, and how to pronounce all these words and all. It must be really hard for other people to learn this language...It is weird because it is so easy for us..Anyways i often wonder how does the alphabet begin, like why did they decide a goes first and then b..does anybody else wonder that? or am i just weird LOL

runnergal08
ya, English is really confusing. you have a good point...like, wats the plural of fox? foxes, or foxen? and i just found out a few months ago that the past tense of swim is swum, not swam. who thinks of these things?? lol

The same reason we park in a driveway and drive on a parkway.

21 is pronounced twenty-one because twenty is an actual number plus the one, hence twenty one. Onety is not a number yet alone a word.

Since English is a conglomeration of older languages, (though most closely resembling German,) you might look at the numeral naming systems for German, French, Latin, etc.

German for 1, 11 and 21: eins, elf and einundzwanzig

einundzwanzig translates to twenty and one, literally.
