Am I allowed to keep money if bank messed up?
I deposited a couple of checks into the atm that scans the checks... no need for enveoples and when I got the reciept, the 200.00 dollar check showed as 20,000. Is there a time frame when the back must take it out or I get to keep it?
Additional Details
no, i didn't put the amount in the atm, it scans the check and show a picture of the check on the screen. The only button i pushed was to end transaction. I didn't find out about the 20,000 until I looked at the recipt.

I suppose you can keep it, but you will be responsible for paying it back to the bank. The bank will discover the error shortly, match it to your account, and you will be hearing from them I'm sure.

its just a glitch --dont get happy

Keep checking your balances! But no, it's not all yours. The bank will find the error and you'll have to pay it all back!

If they messed up and took some of your money by mistake, could they keep it?

Box815
It's not your money and do you really think they'd let you keep it?

if it came back as $2 does the bank get to keep the difference?

You need to alert the bank to its error. Eventually, they will discover their mistake and they will want their money back. If you keep it, you could be in legal trouble. Most certainly, you will need to return it. And if you spent it, you'll be in even more trouble since you might not be in a position to pay it back.

Honesty is the best policy. Really.

The ATM's have internal cameras, I would contact the bank. They will find out there is a problem and look at the video from that ATM. Do the right thing and contact your bank. They will find out where the mistake was made and if you keep the money, you will have to pay it back...probably with interest.

The bank audits their transactions. They will come looking for it. I suggest you don't spend it.

They can claim that money from you at any time, even years into the future. So if you spend it or transfer it somewhere else they can legally come after you for $20,000. I could see a bank letting $10 or $20 slip by....but they will notice this error and take action very soon. Best to fess up and go by a lotto ticket with this kind of luck!

They might have already fixed it in your account. I work at a credit union and every day we go through the atm deposits and verify that the correct amount went in. Also, would you be comfortable spending the money? It isn't yours. Even if you did feel comfortable with that fact, how long would it be until you would feel safe spending it, knowing that they could come back and correct the mistake and hold you liable. most likely you entered it wrong, so you might even be tried for fraud if they prove that you knew about it and did nothing. It was an honest mistake. It looks like the 00 for the cents was ally put on the end of the dollars. If they don't correct it in a day or so, I would go in and point out the error.

We have the same kind of atm but when the bank reads your checks, it also asks if the amount is correct. You must have lied by saying 'yes'. Either way tho, the bank will get their money back.

Mark
No. Notify the bank of your overpayment IMMEDIATELY. If they check thier records and find they have overpaid you (and the chances of this happening are very high) and you have spent one cent of thier money you'll be in a whole load of legal trouble.
