mmoynan | Am I underpaid? |
I'm 18, and I currently have a 3-day a week nanny job, taking care of a 3 year old and 5 year old from 10:30am - 5:30pm, Wednesday - Friday.
I take them to their dance and sport programs on Wednesday and Thursday, and pick the 5 year old up from her friends house on Friday. I also, of course, do the dishes, straighten the house up, cook lunch, and get dinner ready.
I'm being paid $9/hour, and after hearing from other nannies around town (Toronto), I hear that the average is between $13-$17.
I've known the family for 3 years, and have baby-sat the kids many times, but was just recently called in on one weeks notice, to replace their regular nanny on a temporary (4 weeks) full-time basis.
SO, I'm wondering whether this is a fair pay or not ... Additional Details p.s.
the dad is a doctor. |

My ex-gf used to be a part-time nanny to a stay at home mom with 4 kids when she was working on her master's in child phychology. She was getting about $40/hr. This was in the late 90s
There is a premium on nannies who speak full Canadian English, and can discipline a child properly. (go to the mall midday and watch the kids walk all over their non-citizen nannies)
That being said I pay $370 / week for full time care for my two kids. 3 days at that rate would be $222, which would be about $10.50/hr |

I can't say if this is based on your experience or your employers past of payment. Do the other nannies have college degrees in childre care/psychology? Are they better able to take on more needs for the child? Do a comparison and see how you work against some of more expereinced better paid ladies. |

$9 / hour at 18 for part-time work isn't bad.
If you were going to do this full time or permanently, you might want more money. But if it's only for 4 weeks, I guess I'd leave it alone. You already agreed to the rate, so changing now would be kinda rude. |

I think as a part time nanny/helper, $9 an hour sounds reasonable. On the rare occasion we have a baby sitter, I usually pay about $7 an hour, but that is just for an evening. |

Looking after kids is a big responsibility and with that should come a bigger pay check. take them to one side and put your views forward. |

well... the minimum wage is $7.50 in think. so in my opinion u r getting an appropriate amount of money. anyways wat if u ask 4 a raise and the family might take that to b rude and fire u. ask ur self "can i survive w/this money" "is it enough2 buy the necessities"? if u answered yes then don't ask 4 a raise if no then u can search around town 2 c if anybody will give u more money. tell this 2 the family u r working 4. if they rrrreaaaaallllllllllyyyyyyyyy like u then might match the amount of money that family is goining 2 pay. or fore and make u work there!
Good luck |

It sounds like they got a really good deal out of you. You really need to know how much they paid the other Nanny, because if she was making $13, then they knew they were cheating you! But if they were underpaying her (was she an illegal alien?) they still should be willing to pay market. But you have agreed without checking and it is only for 4 weeks, so it might be fair to tell them you found out that this is low pay for a Nanny so they next time they will need to pay the going rate - and if they are nice, perhaps they will pay it now. If they are not nice, you may as well not repeat with them - work for someone who is not so cheap with the help! |

Well,as long as you're being paid above the minimum wage,it's as your employers discretion to pay you what they want. |
