wyckfield | Anyone know how to figure what can make a monthly electric bill go from $100 to $175? |
How do you figure whats making it so expensive? We haven't bought any new things to make it more. |

I'd call the power company and ask for a reread. Usually they will explain to you how to read a meter and hold while you check the reading.
Your bill has almost doubled, so that means heavy usage or a raise in rates. Sometimes a bill will be higher if the meter is normally read every 29 days and the company goes a month and reads it on the 34th day, but it wouldn't be that high.
Possibilities are more baking, using more heat with central air or floor heaters (wattage gobblers), an actual raise in rates (Progress Energy was allowed to hike its rates to cover all the money it lost restoring power from the '04 hurricanes. The raise just went into effect this year, and I saw a dramatic raise in my bill. The usage is the same, it just costs almost twice as much for it. I'm going to be broke this summer, if I can stand the heat, the humidity will still need to be reduced.)
Another possibility is someone is tapping into your electric line. If you cannot trace the increase by checking for rate increases or usage, I'd ask them to send an electrician out to check there isn't "unauthorized usage."
Make sure there isn't a charge for this. |

(1)You may have had a light left on.(2) Prices just go up. The company adds 10% or 10 dollars sometimes to make more money. (3) T.v was pluged in? That can make it go up even if you are not using it. |

Do you leave lights on? Maybe there is something wrong with your meter. Many electric companies offer "time of use plans" so that if you use more electricity during the offpeak times your bill will be cheaper. During the offpeak hours you would do things like washing clothes, cooking(if feasible), using a dishwasher, etc. If you use the airconditioner or heater and keep your windows wide open, you could be wasting eolectricity. If it is cold outside, bright and sunny, forgo the use of the heater because if you open your blinds the sun will heat the room. If you are conserving electricity and your bill is increasing, call the electric company and have them comeout and check your meter. |

One little trick some utilities companies like to pull is not actually sending a meter reader every month. They take a guess as to what they think it will read. This saves them half in labor costs each month. As a result, if they are under the first month, they will be charging you for more usage the next month when they actually do take a reading. Not much you can do about it though. |

A rate hike by the company. If it has been colder than the month before, or used more electricity for some reason, it would have went up. Who read your meter? If it is not read by a person directly, but by electronic sensor, it could have sent wrong reading (that happened to a bunch of homes here), and if the meter itself has become defective it could be showing wrong amounts used. Ask your electric supplier. |

The price of oil has risen. My electric bill has increased by $30 a month in the last several months, and I haven't been doing anything differently. It has become more expensive for the electric companies to generate the electricity (fuel costs). |

If you used an electric heater it will make your bill higher. If its an older one, it will really jump! |

first of all compare meter usage between last couple of months. You could have had a rate increase. could have been read wrong. read your meter every month. |

You can not compare dollar amounts... First look at the kwh (kilo-watt hours)change for both bills if they are much different then that means you used more electricity or they previously used an estimate to determine how much you used. Now if your bill went up alot but you did not use anything new then it could be the heat exchanger on your refrigeration equipment is dirty( this will cause it to run a lot more while trying to cool your food). Also it is possible the insulation in the refrigerator is not working well or the gasket is not working on the door. Check with seller of appliances to see what to do if this might be the problem. Using a clothes drier frequently with small loads will also increase bill quickly. |
