My sister is looking for a new job and I found an ad for her in the classifieds for working for the US Post Office making $20 an hour or 57K a year. So she just called the 800 number and they explained how she has to take an exam to get a job with the post office. Then they said they would send her a study guide for the low price of $99.50.... They also said if she does not pass the exam or does not get hired on the first interview, it is refundable. I just think it is kind of strange that she would need to pay to work for the US Post Office. I'm thinking it is a scam. Anyone work the post office and went through this "exam"?

Yeah I figured it was a scam. I'm thinking of calling the post office and seeing what they say about it. Maybe they can give her an actual interview or exam.

There is a civil service exam. There are also a number of other factors that add in on getting a civil service job. That seems kind of high for a study guide, but it's pretty specialized .The federal government will have material about the test. Read that first. but im sure this is a scam. She can check out a study guide from the local library for free and to verify if it is true or not i went to the post office and they told me that they do not charge for a study guide. The test part is true and if you want to study for it just go to the US Postal Service website they give you all the info on it .

You do not have to pay money! Go to the usps website and look under tests Once you pass the free exam, the po will notify you of openings. These peeps are trying to get money for material you get free from the library. |

Yup, it's a private company selling books, not jobs. She'd still have to go through the same procedures (test, etc) if she applied directly to the post office, but wouldn't pay a fee.
Any sure, it'll be refunded if she doesn't get the job, with no hassle. Uh-huh.
Note that she could buy study guides for the test, if she wants to, at someplace like barnesandnoble.com for a lot less than what they are charging. |

It is true that postal service jobs MAY pay well (some positions) and that there is an exam to be passed before you can be hired (the civil service exam). But these companies that offer the study guides for a fee are a total ripoff. They are not related an any way to the post office. Please tell her not to send any money to them no matter how much she may want to work at the post office. |

It is most definitely a scam, my wife saw that same ad here in Vermont, and we thought the same thing so we went to the Post Office to verify if it is true or not. They told us that they do not charge for a study guide. The test part is true and if you want to study for it just go to the US Postal Service website. They give you all the info on it |

My dad once studied for the postal service exam. I'm not sure about their study guide. A lot of what I remember him reviewing isn't something you can really study. It's more a need to familiarize yourself with things. There's more recognition factor, like which zip code goes with which state and city. If you're dyslexic...forget it because even he got the numbers mixed up after a while. |

You do NOT have to buy the study guide. Go to your local post office and see when the next "TEST" is being held. Hundreds of people take the test (i did years ago), and only dozens are hired. |
