I just bought books of stamps for everyone,, I was going to the post office anyway and with the change I picked up lunch with the change. So I had a pocketfull of dollar coins. The guy at Subway didn't recognize them and kicked me out of the place saying if I didn't leave I could be arrested for passing bogus money.

Dollar coins are legal tender. Many people don't recognize them, since they're not very popular. You're likely to have a similar problem with $2 bills. |

hee hee. i love idiots. I would call the Subway and have him better educate his employees on what legal currency is. I also would have let him call the police. We had similar issues with our illiterate (or at least really ignorant) concession employees at a ballpark I worked at. |

Yes , dollar coins are legal tender.
They are slightly bigger than a quarter.
They have different people on them:
1979,1980, 1999 -Susan B Anthony
2000, 2001- Sakagewea (Native American woman)
Newer dollar coins have American Presidents on them
George Washington
Thomas Jefferson,
John Adams
And the words "In God we trust" printed on the edge of the coin.
(Although some 17,000 with George Washington left the mint without the words "In God we trust" on the edge-If you find one of those, it's worth more to a coin dealer because of it's rarity). |

Obviously this server should have taken your dollar coins, but they are not legally required to. We'll see if yahoo lets me link to google answers, for there's a really good explanation of the ins-and-outs of the law at that site.
Basically, the "legal tender for all debts, public and private" applies to DEBTS, but not to situations where you're purchasing something that you don't actually OWE them for yet, meaning you can't walk into a car dealership and make them take payment in dollar bills (though they probably would), but if your car payment is due and you owe them the money, if you have the money in cash, they have to give you an option for making that payment in cash.
At least that's how I understand it.
Curious where you went as a substitute for a $100 Subway order. It doesn't get much more... economical in the sandwich world.

Yes, they are legal tender. The post office gives dollar coins all the time for change, and if I were you I would not stop there. I would go back to the store and demand to see the manager. Then after he/she comes to talk to you, show him the coins, and tell the manager that his employees need to be educated better to work in this place of business, as ignorance is no excuse to insult customers. Explain how embarrassing it was to be talked to like that. You should have let the cashier call the police. The dollar coins started again with the Susan B. Anthony dollar coin in 1999, and the Sacajawea golden colored dollar coin was shortly thereafter. |

all US coins are legal tender no matter when minted...you should file a small claim action or at very least file a complaint with your local DA...plus send a letter or email to the Subway corporate hq..
many places hire people & run their retail business like an assembly line. people are no longer paid to think in these types of jobs... |

I would have let him call the police and after they arrived and you documented everything sue the clerk, the store, and the franchiser.
This has nothing to do with the coins being legal tender or not. The clerk was insinuating that you were passing counterfeit money. That is slander. I hope there were witnesses.
I also hope that he actually made up $100 in sandwiches and then explained to the owner what happened. |

That guy must not have heard a couple years back that the Fed mint was going to start production on the $1 dollar coin. Yes, their loss.
In fact, I'd call the Federal Reserve in your nearest town and report their refusal to recognize U.S. government legal tender. What a dumb@ss!!!!

well ive never heard of a twenty dollar coin, but if you know its legal tender than NO you cannot be arrested or get in trouble! About 5 or so years ago that happened to me i had an old $100 dollar bill and when i went to gap i paid or tried to pay for my purchase with it and the man told me that it was fake, i think it was a lil racial tension there, but i just opulled out another hundred and paid for my purchase, but people are so ignorant....they are just mad cause we are shopping and purchasing food while they are working bogus jobs! |
