Are organized unions good or bad for employees and employers?

It's really a matter of perspective.
For the employees:
- They can be good because of collective bargaining, which can help them get better wages, set overtime pay rates, better working conditions, better insurance, and reasonable working hours (even for over-time). They also get the backing of the union when times go bad and so in trade for paying union dues, they get unemployment benefits and can collect state unemployment besides.
- They can be bad because pay rates are levelled according to experience and expertise. There's no chance for personal negotiation regarding pay. So union members don't get a chance to maximize their wages. They also miss out on working lots of overtime to help boost their paycheck. They also have to pay union dues, which take $ out of their paychecks automatically (like it or not). The employees also have to deal with the fear of a strike or walk-out, which usually means that they don't work while the union negotiates on one point or the other (even though the union still pays them a stipend while they're on strike, but it never measures up to working wages).

For employers:
- Unions can be good because the employers get a steady stream of capable workers that have to show up for their paycheck. If the workers don't show up, all the employer needs to do is call up the union and a replacement worker is sent over right away.
- Unions can be bad because they're forced to negotiate packaged benefits and wages for their employees. This can end up costing the employer a lot of money. They have to deal with the scrutiny of union stewards & leaders everytime there's an injury or firing. In short, they get pushed around. They can also be bad because at ANY time the union can decide to go on strike because they didn't get something during their last round of negotiations. This can cause an employer to lose lots of money while they try to get non-union replacement workers (also called Scabs).

well when they are strong, they are good for employees, and CAN also be good for employers too if they are ran responsibly.

UAW is a sinking ship and I believe that most unions are anchored to UAW. As long as the country makes it so easy for the greedy corporations to operate in foreign lands, the unions and people will suffer.

$64 an hour? Thats a lie, unless you are counting everything like benefits and everything else- in that case, your average non-union worker makes 20 bucks an hour! Max pay for the average UAW employee is less than half of what you said. I agree it is still a great paycheck, but try working on the line for GM for 8 hours a day- the majority of us that work for GM dont have those mythical cake jobs I always heard about b4 I got in there. AND as far as the unions driving companies to bankruptcy thats a farce too- most of the locals are all caving in to whatever GM asks of them- the union is giving up everything and bowing down to GM like prison wives. The reason GM is laying everyone off is because they are moving all their factories off shore.

before I started working at GM, I thought "how hard can it be?" but when I got there and learned the psychological strain it puts on people, the physical strain it does to the body, and never knowing what time you will get out until a half hour before you get to leave- I can see that if they didnt pay what they do, NO_ONE would work for them. They regularly screw the employees however they can- if it werent for the unions- GM would have been out of business long ago. They have no idea how to run a business with happy employees.

dmbangel, I wish you worked at my plant before you go spouting off about watching a conveyor belt- those cars u drive dont put themselves together- on my job I have 53 seconds to put 8 different parts on a car. we build 500 cars per day each shift, I used to think the same as you until I actually got into my job- many people dont make it 30 days EVEN FOR THE MONEY- most people can not hack it doing a line job in my plant. I would bet you would quit after a week, simply by your attitude about it. Also, you get what you pay for- it has been proven time and time again- every time GM sells out to a contract company, the cars suffer and so do the consumers- you pay someone non-union wages, they will not care about quality, unless the job IS a piece of cake. Dont blame the unions for corps moving to other countries, because if they only paid us 8 bucks an hour, they would still move to pay them 7.99/hour- its all about greed with those corps- AND if it werent for the money that the automobile industry and other union type jobs- this country would have fell apart years ago.

it is always good so that there is a proper and formal way to do things around the company.

Yea, it's great for employees because they get $25.00/hr to sit on their *** all day and watch **** go by on a conveyer belt. It's also great for employees when they keep asking for too much **** and their employer can't give it to them because they continue to lose money thru wages, pension plans, and uber good benefits. Why do you think all the jobs are going to India? Instead of paying someone $25/hr plus full benefits, they can pay someone $25/day to do the VERY SAME job and they don't give a ***** about benefits they are just happy because they can feed their families.

I feel like there are advantages, and disadvantages in having an orgarnized union at your workplace. I agree that its good for employees to stick together, to gaurd against unfair work practices. It sometimes helps when the employees are trying for raises, or increased benefits. But I don't agree with the policys on Seneority. I don't believe you should get the position, just because you are next in line for it, I believe the the best person for the job should have it. Also, I have seen people do stupid things, that they ought to of been fired for, and the union protects them, and keeps them out here. I believe that if you screw up, you should be accountable for it, and get fired if thats what you deserve.

They're somewhat good for employees, because they can get great paychecks, but it cripples the employers to the point where they sometimes go out of business, or have to lay off a ton of employees, like you've seen recently with GMC and Ford, not to mention the airlines.

GMC said that their average worker that was in a union made $64 an hour. This included people who do nothing but sit around and spin on lug nuts on tires. The employers cannot afford this for too long, hence this is why cars cost so damn much - they have to jack up the price to pay their bills.

Large companies that have a large staff of skilled employees need a blanket contract for all those people. If the company were to try to contract with each individual it may be a nightmare. The company and union are constantly bartering wages and benefits to the advantage of each. I make above average wages, but I am a highly skilled effective craftsman. I cannot be replaced except by an expert who would make more than me.

Unions are very good for employees they protect members from things like getting layed off... How ever just because you work for a company that has a union doesnt mean you are in it... After you begin work you have to sign up and sign paper work and stuff. even after you've signed everythig you still aren't safe until you are sworn in up until this point you are not protected by anything

Bellvusnob
I'm an a union at work, and I don't think they really do much for us, I get tired of paying dues every month and it does not seem like we are getting much in return.

sadealz
These days unions do not work for the workers anymore. it is just another corporation all about money which is past to them under the table from the employers

catkinso3201
This is really an opinion question, but I think most people would argue that organized unions are good for employees. They help to raise the pay rate, as well as benefits and working conditions. I guess that you could say that employers would consider them bad because somebody has to pay for all of these improvements.

Also some people think that unions are bad. For example, many people, even union workers I know personally, think that the Teacher's Union is too strong--that is that many teachers gain their tenure and then slack off and get paid extremely well because they have tenure (which if you didn't know is a protection from being fired unless the teacher did something really bad).

It's all a matter of opinion.

bulletproof375
I feel its bad for both because it separates the company from the employees and creates an unnecessary battle to get anything done.

There are good and bad sides to both.

Good for employees when everything goes right, but there are sometimes union dues, and if the union decides to strike, then you have to strike with them and will not get paid during the time of not working.

It can also be good for employers. Some companies WANT their employees to be a part of a union, and it is a mandatory thing to work for them. I do not fully understand why, this is however. You might want to do a search on the subject.

Ok, I wasn't as helpful as I had hoped I would be.
