Are scottish bank notes legal in england?

Joe King
The strange thing is not even in Scotland! To be legal tender it must be accepted for payment. A Scottish note can still be refused in Scotland. Also coins are only legal tender up to a certain limit. You can't pay a court fine in coins.

yes, there are still legal tender although every establish has the discretion to refuse them. all scottish notes, though, have the word Sterling on them, making them legal in england.

Yes! The wrangling stems from the idea of pounds sterling being less in value ( historicaol idea ) however it is a moot point now. You can find it difficult to spend them in England however and if planning a trip maybe best to use coins. There is no valid legal argument though for denying them.

Yup - I spend some pretty much every week down here.

You'll have difficutly getting anyone to accept the RBS £1 notes (If all else fails take them to a NatWest bank - it's part of the RBS Group) but everything else is fair game. They'll be easier to spend in cities than in rural villages. and the closer to The Borders you are (Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne & Wear) the easier they are to spend anywhere.

ay, they are, but £1 notes arnt pretty much everywere. The smaller independant owned shops tend not to excpet them, in Cumbria and Nothumbria they might. Also, in vending machines and train ticket machines, scottish notes are usually not accepted. Its probably easier just to change them into Bank of England 1s m8, cause i had loads a trouble down there!

btmduk
Yes, although I have had problems using them in pubs and night clubs.

Yes but they're harder to spend the further you get from Kings Cross or Euston.

yes they are but there a lot of forged scot ten pound notes going around

Yes, but the further south you get the fewer shop assistants know this fact. If you've got some to spend, try and spend them in the north of England, or even better spend them all in Scotland!

I cant say it would be illegal, however chances are 99.9% of companies wont accept it as payment.
