As a father of five sons and a teacher for twenty years I highly endorse the Simpsons. It is without a doubt one of the two or three best written, intelligent programs in television history. Not of our generation alone but of television history. Here you have a family that is relatively poor, a bit dysfunctional, obnoxious, and yet neither spouse has ever cheated on each other, the kids always come home after school, none are involved in drugs or gangs, they work out problems, and the parents stay together. Find me another television program that endorses values like that. Marrital sex is hinted at, which is normal and healthy, poor grades are a concern, which is normal and healthy, negative behavior has consequences, which is normal and healthy. It is great. However it requires a good cultural awareness to get the jokes. I've found that dumb people who don't read much seldom like the Simpsons and the reason is clear--they are too stupid to get the jokes. But I love and my family watches it regularly.

All right, so Lisa had pre-marital sex with Milhouse later in life, but besides that it is pretty much on the up and up.

"The Simpsons" does have some references that are inappropriate for young children. But the show also has some episodes which contain good lessons for younger and older children.
I suppose the animation and antics of Homer, Bart, and Lisa are what attracts children to the show.
"Family Guy," although I think it is VERY funny, is completely inappropriate for children; there are too many sexual and scatological references in the show.

Personally no I do not allow my children to watch this show. They find out enough at school from those children whose parents do allow their children to watch it and other shows that are vulgar and very disrespectful!!!!

I think sometimes they use language that is not necessarily appropriate for children. I think kids just like them because they are cartoons and because they are mean, but they are not good influence on them.

Well not realy, given the language and sexual inuendo.

Also the question arises do children understand the story line which appear to consist largely of political or social satyr.
I dare so those who studied child psychology probaly would say not until they are much older e.g. 13 to 14 maybe. It should be noted that the age group is my personal guess.

dodgy questions but i think i know what you mean.
kids like bart - hes a prankster and a cool dude but still gets bullied. a reflection of you average 8 year old.

older peole prefer homer and his approach to beer, women and work. during his sketches, younger kids just turn off and via versa.

perfect ballance.
