Are there any banks that don't charge fees?
I just found out today that my bank is charging me not only a monthly fee to have my ATM card, but now they're charging an activation fee!!! This is completely outrageous! I filed a complaint with the bank, but I doubt they care.

They charge fees for everything: to have an ATM card, to use the ATM card, to write checks (if you write too many they penalize you; if you use net banking they charge you for that, too!), etc., etc... and I have "FREE" checking.

Is anyone out there satisfied with their bank and isn't being charged to death????

Shop around. It's obvious that your bank is jerking you around. For information on best banks, try http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/personal-finance/lower-checking-fees-903/overview.htm.

Do your homework. Make a list and find out the following from each bank you look up:

1. do they offer free checking

2. is there a limit on the number of checks you can write every month; if there's a limit, what's the charge on going over your limit

3. what are the non-proprietary ATM fees (these means 'do they charge if you use a bank ATM that is not their own')?

4. is there an annual/monthly fee to have an ATM card?

I have sovereign bank and they're pretty good. Their customer service is so-so, though, so eventually I'm going to look for another bank, too. Good luck.

Try joining a credit union. Banks are established to make a profit, credit unions are not. By the way, whoever suggested Wells Fargo, I work for them, they charge for practically everything.

My bank is great they don't charge me anything unless I use a different banks atm or i overdraw my account. Most of the banks are like mine here in WA. You should go to different banks and see which ones are like mine cuz that bank is screwing you.

I use Fifth Third Bank

Totally free.

Only been charged due to my own fault, ie bounced check

bank of America is good about not having fees, but they puts 7-day holds on your pay checks until you build up enough of a balance to counter future checks.

Commerce is a great bank, open 7 days a week, and they don't do any of that hog wash. Go there if you are in the northeast.

And credit unions, not banks, are generally good about not having ridiculous fees, but they choose their members (clients.) If you are a teacher, public servant, or related to either one of those groups, you should qualify. There are other groups too that have credit unions.

I use Wachovia and Bank of America. Both are pretty good and I have never been charged any additional fee - except overdraft.

Some banks do say that they have free checking - if your balance is over a certain amount. If I remember correctly, the minimum balance for having a free checking account at Bank of America is 300USD. This is called maintenance fee.

I live in Virginia.

i use Washington Mutual ...i have an savings account and free checking..they don't take out no fee..but the catch with it you have to have at least $25 in your checking account and each month it gets transferred to your saving account..but it better then the bank taking your money..by the way you can go to any atm machine and they dont charge you for it..even if its not your bank..

starflower_aries

I don't know where you are from, but all banks are going to charge you certain fees. NSF fees are a given and most charge for you using your debit or ATM card at other banks ATM's. It does sound like you have a bad deal if they are charging you for net banking. Most banks just charge a small activation fee or no fee for net banking, then it is free with no monthly fee after that. If you have bill pay (where you pay all your bills online)on the other hand then it is usually like a $5.00 a month charge. The best thing I know to tell you is to just shop around a little bit and normally banks have a fee sheet they can let you look at that has all the fees and how much they are. I hope this helps.
