Most are fly-by-night companies that set up quickly, get a bunch of people to join, and end up closing down after they've made some money but before they pay their members. Be really careful before joining any online money making site.
I recommend that you do what you're doing here, ask a neutral 3rd party, and do a little fact-finding. If a site requires that you pay to join, it's bogus and you should run the other way.
I have made a lot of money online, but at first it wasn't easy. I bounced around from site to site not knowing what was legitimate and what wasn't and I made some mistakes. Right now I use two different sites, one that I fill out surveys for as you mentioned, and I love it. It's a wonderful way to supplement your income.
