As Canadians, should we really be happy to have our Canadian dollar at par with the US dollar?
Some sectors of our society, especially those in the exporting business, are complaining of our appreciating Canadian dollar. While most of the consumers, especially those who likes to shop at the US border, are happy with it. Should we really be happy with it even though this could mean job cutiing for other exporting companies?

Consumers shopping in the US whould be happy, but your economy will take a hit as foreign investors will likely opt to invest in the US and/or reduce investment in Canada.

MICHAEL
No... Actually it is hurting canada and europe, because people in the states can't afford the imports from other countries. It is now cheaper for them to purchase at home and are more unlikely to travel for additional expenses.I know, I live in michigan and love canada!

Sephina
yes...there are job cuts anyways! but i don't get why our prices are still so much higher than the US

and when the CND dollar is up like that...shyeah ppl will care about Canada

For 30 years or so we have had an economy that traded off a weak dollar - It will hurt the manufactureing sector hard

But if you will notice a lot of retailers have decided to ignore the value and continue to charge the same amount on Cdn product and people are complaining

I don't think it is so much that the loonie is making a huge jump upwards as the US dollar is sliding downwards and that may mean we have to jump to find a new consumer of our stuff - perhaps Europe but that may be seen as a provocative move by Washington who has a genuine fear of the Euro replacing the greenback in oil and other commodities -

At the end of the day we end up monkey in the middle again or still I am not sure which

One thing is sure I am not impressed by those in the Cdn retail sector who choose to ignore for profit the ligitimate concerns of Cdn people - Where is the savings on domestic goods big and small ? Corperate greed is apparently not somthing exclusively owned by yankies as we smugly and naively believed

Governments and retailers take note we are not a stupid people and we tend to be quite punitive to those who practice this sort of greed Play with us at your own peril we can will and have in the past taken our wallets elsewhere

Governments that refuse to enforce fair play may be told where the unemployment line up is

I like selling stuff on ebay to Canadians. They always bid higher than the Americans now :)

Now it's time for the exporting companies to see what the importers were suffering through.

Tourism will take a hit too. We vacationed there this summer and realized we could have rented a house on the beach at Myrtle beach for a week for the same money, or less, than what we spent at Niagara falls for 3 days.

You would be BLESSED to have the Canadian Dollar on par with the US dollar. The Canadian Dollar has NEVER been valued greater than the US Dollar nor is it today.

1 US Dollar = 0.97879 Canadian Dollar

1 Canadian

Dollar (CAD) = 1.02167 US Dollar (USD)

Nice Goal eh?
