As a parent is it better to give the children £35 a month or £16 a month, But still buy then stuff.?
I'm really stuck at what to do...
Is it better to give then £35 to buy all of there non essentials, But baring in mind that it will teach them a life lesson with money and give them freedom.

Or too give then £16 a month but buy all of there non essentials.
My kids are 13.
Please help me i need to know witch one to do like really soon.
Thank you!

35 pounds a month?!?! Since I left England everyone has obviously become a lot richer. Give them 16 and nothing else...or even better give them nothing and reward them with allowance when they help out around the house or do something of merit. If you gave me 35 pounds per month when I was 13 I would have probably spent it on alcohol or cigarettes. Kids don't need that much, just give them what they need if they want to go out or do something.

You will find that no matter how much you give them they will ask for more.Lets face it, enough is never enough, even for us adults.

If you give them £16 they will spend it and ask for more , likewise if you give them £35 that will be spent also and you will still be asked for more.

When I was that age I was made to get a job to buy cd's (actually records then!) and make up etc. Or if you don't want them doing paper round etc why don't you suggest they do paid odd jobs for friends and neighbours like washing cars, cleaning windows, gardening etc. That way they will really learn the value of money and will enjoy spending their hard earned cash a lot more!

When I was 14 to 16 i had the family allowance which was £45 a month but on one condition- I had to buy all my own stuff like clothes, CD's and some stuff for school.
I think it teaches them about how to look after your money and how to spend it-
If i spent all my money I had to wait until next month and it was really hard but then I realised i shouldnt spend it all at once and save a little bit every month.
I you carry on buying your kids stuff they will rely on it so do it now, you'll be glad you did in the future.
P.s. i have never asked my parents for money and have my own and am loads better off!!!

£35 is a lot of money for teenagers to get in one go, i would consider dividing it into a weekly or fortnightly payment so they don't get used to instant gratification, but are encouraged to save.
I am not sure when kids can open a bank account with a debit card, but if you are still giving them money in a couple of years i'd suggest having a direct debit set up to go into their own accounts, to get them used to managing their own account and using a debit card before they start earning their own money.

I would definitely reccomend just giving them the money and not buying them anything else extra. It will teach them to budget and save.

However when you do this, make sure it is perfectly clear that they will get nothing else out of you, or they will never really learn the lesson you are trying to teach them.

My kids are 9 and 11. I don't give them pocket money as I usually give them what they want.

By giving your kids money you are teaching them a great lesson for when they have to support themselves... seriously-- you can "give" them the same amount, but make them work for it in some manner on another. Pay them extra high wages for yard work-- pay them for household chores that are normally mandatory. If they don't want to work, fine, but don't give them any money. It is an easy way to teach a kid the principles of economics. If they want something, they have to work for it.

Karen
I say you should give them $35 and that way the can learn to be responsible with money.

wish I could get off with £35.00 per month a week more like.

Bajan Deane
I would give them £25 per month as a lump sum and buy nothing else. The other £10 would be there are 'potential earning capacity' if they undertook additional chores etc and earned them.

Just make sure you do not give in when they burn out their money within two days the first couple of months they get this lump sum and give them more money without them having to earn it.
