Bank charges?
Has anybody sucessfully claimed back charges, that their banks have taken for being overdrawn or returned Direct Debits?

i have recently gotten my charge back from HSBC...

They charged me £89 for overdrawing a mere £10 over my limit...so i went onto their website and logged a complaint.

They then sent me a letter explaining that the charges were stated in my contract etc etc blah blah blah...

so then i sent ANOTHER complaint, saying that i understand that i must get charged for drawing over the limit, but charging me almost THREE TIMES the original amount is ridiculous, and i said i was going to take them to the small claims court and change banks...

They refunded me!

?
Yes, I have on a few occasions. They say they will refund 'just this once' but you have to keep a check on them as there are times when the charge is really out of order and unfair.

Yes but you have to argue politely with your bank and pretend it's not your fault even if it is. Most banks won't do it more than once for you every six months. Banks in the UK are dropping charge costs to about £10-£12 instead of £30 or whatever 'cos the government have had a moan.

?
If you made a check and were overdrawn, they'll charge so much percent. being overdrawn, the same thing. And there is nothing you can do! Unless some company or someone, make charges with your card, or write a check, without your knoledge, then the Bank will make good the amount of money they used!!

I've been charged three times and got my money back three times (once for cheque bouncing, twice for going overdrawn), all i did was go into the bank, asked to see the manager and explained that it wasn't acceptable to be charged so much and if it wasn't rectified i would change my account to a different bank...make sure you are polite though, nothing worse then going in and shouting your head off, that will not solve anything.

I am trying to now.................so fingers crossed!
Go to www.moneysavingexpert.com
This gives you all the info you need to do it and templates of the letters you need to send.
Good luck!

Yep. Just threatened to close the account, and they bent over backwards.

Of course this only works if losing a little in the short run will allow them to keep you in the long run. There's a point where taking a loss wouldn't be a wise choice, and then you're SOL.

jsbrunette
yes, i have when they seen the mistake they fixed it right away!

Michael H
yes, you'll need to talk directly to them.

It helps to have a few million in your account.

Evenrything in the world is negotiable

I once had a cheque bounce because it would have taken me £2 overdrawn. They wrote to me pointing this out and charged me £20. I wrote back and said that the whole thing was totally unreasonable. They wrote back threatening legal action and charged me another £20!!
I wrote once more and politely told them to get stuffed. I never heard anything from them ever again.
This was a big high street bank.
If we owe the bank £10 it is our problem. If we owe the bank £10 million, it is the bank's problem.
