Banks and asking for information over the phone?
HSBC bank called me today and asked me to give them my DOB so they could discuss my account. I told them that i do not give out such information over the phone as i could be talking to anybody. has anyone else experienced this problem, as the banks are always telling us not to divulge information. The guy from the call centre was quite aggressive when i said NO

Nice one. A couple of months ago I had a call from someone saying they were from my bank (Barclays), and said it was just a courtesy call to discuss my account, then asked me to confirm my date of birth for security reasons.

I asked why he was calling me at home when I'd specified to my bank that I didn't want to be called by them, and also asked how I would know he was genuinely calling from my bank. I was conned out of a lot of money by Paypal almost a year ago and since then have been wary about my details.

The bloke got really aggressive, shouty and pushy telling me that he could tell me anything about myself that I needed to know to prove he was who he said he was, and acted extremely offended that I wouldn't just confirm my details to him!! I just told him politely that I did not want to discuss my account over the phone and as he started pretty much shouting back at me all about how he was who he said he was, I told him to get stuffed and hung up!!!

I did 1471 and got the phone number he'd called from, then rang my bank's customer services and they confirmed that the number he rang from was one of their offices and put an even clearer marker on my account to say I didn't want ringing about my account....I'd already done this but it seems it doesn't always seem to matter!!

Very annoying, why can't banks just write to you and request you go to a branch or something? Surely they know people are more and more wary of giving their info out over the phone and internet

Not had any problem but good on you for not telling him anything. If you get anymore calls just say if you want to discuss your account you will go into your local branch and talk to a real person face to face. In this day and age you cannot be too careful.

Charlie Babbage
I think that you were right to be cautious!

If it happens again ask them for their number so you can ring them back. Alternatively, ask them to write to you.

My bank has a series of confidential Q and A to ask to check authenticity of the call. k

walyank
I would have done the same except maybe insult him when he got aggressive.

You were absolutely right to refuse information - it could have been anybody .

You were absolutely right to refuse for the security reason you gave. As the person at the call centre was aggressive then it's quite likely the call was a scam....... I always ask for a return phone number in such cases before discussing anything then ring my branch to check if the call was authentic.

I'd do the same my bank never phones me if I phone them I go through my security and that's it.

keith j
You did exactly the right thing,.
If it was your bank, why were they asking for information they already have ?
And as for the aggressive attitude, shows you did the right thing.

glitter
Whoa!!!!!!!!Don't even go down that road! You did right by not giving them anything-if they want you, they can write to you!!

sosgez
Good for you !!!!

Yes Capital One did it to me. I refused to give them any info and explained why but assured them I would call back on the number I have on my statements. I think its really bad when they phone you and ask you for security info, they could be anyone. And they don't like it when you ask THEM to prove who they are. Although the guy I spoke to offered to give me info about my account to prove who he was but I said he could have found a statement of mine somewhere!! Its double standards though as usual.
