Can I complain about shop assistant?
I am 28 years old and one woman in my local supermarket keeps asking me for I.D to buy cigarettes, I am all for the need to identify young looking people and I would usually take this as a compliment but it seems as though she is doing it on purpose now. Can I complain?

Yes, you can certainly have a word with her manager/superviser, or write a letter to head office. Obviously, technically she isn't doing anything wrong; however, if she is only asking you continuously for I.D, then it discrimination, in a way, which should be frowned upon by her employers.

Just show your ID and go have a smoke, you will soon look older.

Of course you can complain. Anyone can complain about anything. [My personal favourite, working in theatre, was a complaint that a specifically requested aisle seat wasn't nearer the centre of the row.]

However, from what you have said it does appear you have a VALID complaint in this instance, although it is hardly worth going to court over.

Is the real problem the attitude of the assistant, rather than being asked for ID? Someone smiling and saying "Sorry, I'm going to have to ask for ID again - it's company policy, and we have to obey the letter of the law" is very different from someone snapping out "So - where's your ID?"

I'd suggest writing to the manager of that particular store explaining your complaint clearly and succinctly, as you did in your question.
[Simply taking out a pen and notebook and asking the shop assistant for their own full name and the name of the store manager can cause a remarkable change of attitude.]

Don't officiously demand to speak to the manager there and then - any decent manager will back up their staff in that sort of confrontation (although they may have a 'conversation' with the staff member involved, in private, later).

Threatening to withdraw your custom is always a good tactic in a letter.

The other workable tactic is to always hand over your ID before being asked, grimace and mutter 'stupid jealous b-tch - just 'cause I look great at 28' very very quietly when looking her straight in the eye.

I use to work in a supermarket and we had to ask everyone for ID no matter what there age, stupid but a lot of people will get approached by someone outside asking them to buy the fags/booze for them. Being asked to constantly show your ID with make you think twice about doing it again. A company can loose there licience if seen selling alcohol or fags to someone under age, its a risk most employers wont like to take. The lady is more likely to get a well done then a telling off, she is doing her job after all!

Next time have your ID ready and then show it to her and say " i am old enough, next time you might not ave 2 ask me as you ave asked me several times'. If she continues you could try and ask 2 talk 2 a manager but i bet they will say that its the law 2 ask for ID.

I would just have the ID ready evey time and b4 u ask 4 yr cigarettes just show it and she might soon stop asking you.

You should take it as a compliment! LOL.

Biker Crazy
she obviously can't remember you but I would take some ID as its not worth the hassle or buy from elsewhere. Her boss may compliment her for being so thorough, even though you suspect she is being a c-w!

I don't think you can as she's asking for id for a reason. You could try going to a different cashier or just handing your id over automatically.

This is a supermarket - just think how many customers they see in one day and then think why you should be so special that you would stick in their memory?

smiling_freds_biz_info
Maybe she's trying to help you live longer by discouraging you?
Say Thanks for the effort next time.

Please complain, but about their procedures not the cashier. When I worked in a shop I had displinary after displinary from my managers for not IDing customers regardless of whether I'd asked them before or I knew them...she's just doing what her job says and she's prob been told it's to stop her getting fined, but supervisors etc don't seem to get that it just pisses everyone off,so yes complain cuz it's rediculous.

Melanie H
Yes you can complain you can go straight to her manager or write to the head office. make sure you get her name so nobody else gets the blame. if you write to head office she will have no way of knowing it was you.

Louise M
Her manager/boss might just tell you she's doing her job bt i wld give it a try anyway :)
