Can I put a future date on a cheque so it is not able to be paid until that date?

minootoo
No.

I will never accept it and no good bank will accept it if they see the date, because of automation date is not read and it will go thru the system and will bounce affecting the credit and costing you the money.

If the writer dies before the date on the check, the check is not a valid check, a good lawyer will challenge the transaction, the person trying to get the money will be charged with fraud automatically, dead person cannot write a check.

In spite of this some people will accept a predated check, with an intention to post it right away. Most people will not hold it. Now writer of the check is in the hot seat.

Yes, that is called a post dated cheque. But the person to whom you are giving may or may not accept. Banks don't accept post dated cheques in many cases.

yap
ya u can definately put it, it will be a post dated cheque....

douglas b
It's not called 'post-dating' (that's when you use a previous date - post being Latin for after), it's called 'pre-dating' (pre being Latin for before), and yes, it's possible to do it.

khuranapvp
Yes. The bank is not entitled to give the payment before the date you mention on the cheque.

That's referred to as "post-dating". It is usually not permitted without the approval of the payee.

bigd
Yes. As long as the bank doesn't make a mistake and honor the check, I've done that before and have seen it done.

wasislos
Since 1996 most states in the USA have changed their banking code to allow banks to ignore "post dating' when paying a check unless furnished with prior written notification by the drawer of the check. I'm sure its not illegal to write a post dated check but that doesn't seem to prevent the bank from cashing it early or give you any recourse if they do.

Lawrence of Arabia
Yes you can, Put the future date between \ \ such two marks.

smoke
Duh.....its called a post dated check

The bank will just clear it, and bill you if there is insufficient funds. No one is going to bother with the date. Even if the sorting computer picks it up, it's too much trouble for a lowly paid bank clerk to do anything about. Read your terms and conditions, it usually states in there not to post date cheques. As you have opened an account, you have agreed to these terms and conditions.
