Can a family of 3 survive on $22,000 per year?
My husband and I are expecting our first child in November. Right now we both work full time, but starting when our baby is about to come, we will be living on just my husband's income. The cost of daycare is about the same as what I would be making working, so it only makes sense for me to stay home. Some additional details: The above salary is before taxes and group health insurance is taken out. We have very little debt, no rent/mortgage, and no car payments. We both have EXCELLENT credit. I'm just curious to see what other people's opinions are. So, what do you think?

Mr.Wise
If you have no mortgage or rent and no car payments, you should have little trouble. Your total income has already increased to the equivalent of up to $35k per year. Assuming that your husband's wages can only go up, and with good credit, your future looks bright. Only buy a modest home for starters, work up from there, easy on the credit cards (a family killer).

You're in great shape. No rent/mortgage or car payments? In that case, it really doesn't matter where you live. Your basic costs are gas and groceries. Did you save the baby clothes from the first child? Have a baby shower and open a baby register like a wedding registry. Register for loads of diapers. Breast feed for the first year and you will be dandy. Just start putting 10% into a savings account (you won't miss it) and you will be fine. Keep your priorities intact and you will be just fine. Congratulations on the latest addition to the family.

yes, but you must be very careful with the money you do have and try not to use credit cards if possable. if you can`t pay cash you can`t afford it.

it would be very very hard to survive on that income.

You definitely can. We're about in that situation with exception we have two kids and a rent payment, but no health insurance deducted. It can work! Just make sure to prioritize your purchases and I hate the thought of it too, but get on WIC or FIP (food stamps) if you aren't going to breastfeed. Those will help with the ungodly cost of formula.

It will be a stretch if you are used to more but people manage all the time. I am sure you will be fine.

To me it would be very hard. BUT, there was an article on Yahoo the other day about a family of 8 that makes it on $35K a year - I can['t believe that the house they live in and 2 cars they do on $35K, plus health insurance, savings. They buy everything they possibly can second-hand.

sure you can do it theres a lot that live on less but living well .. you going to need more

I'd suggest making a budget and seeing what are your expenses now. Certainly, those will change when the baby comes, and you'll need to adjust for that. Given that you have no rent/mortgage or car payments (which are generally the largest expenses), it may be possible. But the only way is to list out your expenses and see where you're at. With a baby coming, you'll probably need to look at insurance and educational expenses in addition to the baby care expenses (formula, diapers, etc.).

Good Luck!

Most of your major expense items are taken care of:

health insurance
housing
transportation

Its really depends on where you live & the cost of living there.

22k is not enough to live off of with a family of 3. you have to take into consideration that your baby will have needs that cant be put off until you get enough money. you could help your husband out by working, at least a part time job. have family babysit, that way you can avoid paying daycare expenses. after all, thats what family is for..to help out in time of need. hell, a family of two, like my fiance and i couldn't make it on 22k a year. work part time until your child is a lil older, then, maybe one of you can go to school and get a degree in something to make lives a lil easier. because money will be an issue, and you will argue over not having enough to pay dr bills...etc..you dont want that. be a strong woman, and help your man out as much as you can...dont leave him with the burden of bringin in all the income...cause you want money of your own to spend. you definately dont wanna look like a child, asking him for money everytime you want something nice.
