Only if you want to, and the employer has to pay you over time.

joencrystal
Only if your on salary.

joncreamer1
They can't make you, you can always quit.

mazziatplay
If you are a salaried rather than hourly employee your hours become irrelevant.

rickinobetz
yep he can. if it's mandatory

HEATHER
Yes, it is called manditory overtime.
Welcome to the real world.
Wanna keep your job; work it.
Wanna look for another; argue, complain and skip it.

Not much fun, huh :(

Sure they can. But if you are a non-exempt (non-salaried) employee, then they have to pay you overtime.

Note that the link mentions "an employer who requires or permits". That means that the option is to the employer. If the employer couldn't "require" you, then it would only say "permits."

Sorry for the bad news.

old lady
Depends entirely on your contract. Some unions have a 40hr a week limit, but have a provision for overtime when required. Some professions -- eg doctors in the hospital -- regularily work more than a 40 hour week. Bottom line is 40 hrs is regarded as the maximum, except in cases where overtime is required. If overtime is required every week, then the contract is being abused. If it's a legitimate need, whether to meet a rush order or to fill in for a missing colleague, then it is allowable.

Yeah, but what a strange question. Why would you not want to work overtime if your employer needs you to? If you don't like the company, or the guy - you should leave, and complain about him when you get to your next job.

If the success of the company is important to you - why even ask?

If the success of the company is not important to you, you should move on.

Oh yes, many engineers work long hours all the time. There were times that I had to work 30 hours straight to meet a deadline. We don't get overtime, but we do get paid a lot.

BigDaddy
usually you are only obligated to work 40 hours, unless this was something that you discussed when you where hired. but you shouldn't be forced to working more than 40 hours
