Additional Details should have put in that i am seeking help with the panic attacks and i have spoken to my bosses about what they are like but they dont care and dont want to know.. |

1.See your own doctor and address the problem you have with panic attacks , there is a lot of new drugs on the market today which really help , its just a case of finding the right one for you and many of them are not addictive.
2.Read your terms of employment contract ( if you have one )this should tell you what is required of you . Every employee should have one of these by law.
3.You must at all cost see your company doctor , wether it be 2 hours away or not ,im sure you have friends who can help you , or maybe ask your employer if other arrangements could be made to see the doctor at your place of work.
4 . Remember you can only be fired on the spot for gross misconduct , if they are trying to get rid of you for performance related issues then there is a procedure which they have to go through .
1. verbal warning
2 . written warning .
3 . final written warning
If they do not go through this procedure then you can sue them for unfair dismissal.
Remember there is a lot of help out there to protect the employee , best of luck. |

I would start looking for a job that fit my needs better. It is obvious that they are trying to get you to quit. It sounds like a lousy place to work anyway. |

As a health professional of many years standing I would say that you definately need help in managing these panic attacks and what seems like a little chlostrophobia too. As has been mentioned your boss may well be thinking of your welfare when he or she suggests a visit to the company doctor (although I am surprised that the doc does not come to the workplace).
Go to the doctor, and I suggest your own family doctor too, who may be able to prescribe some medication for you.
Find out what the employment laws are in your country/state and if necessary remind your employers of them.
They simply can not sack you for being ill, but they may take action if you are considered to be a liability to the company and a hinderence to your colleagues. |

yes there is very little legal protection and employment tribunals are expensive, slow and pay derisory awards, often headed by imbiciles as well im afraid. go into work, stick a virus on the mainframe, find another job, take copies of everything, tape all meetings, phone calls, have a solicitor present, if you can work for yourself
try bully on line for advice |

It sounds like they're trying to get rid of you.
I don't know if you're in the UK - but here they can't sack you because of a medical condition (and panic attacks are a psychiatric disorder - so it is a medical problem). Go and seek advice from the Citizens Advice Bureau (if you're in the UK...) |

Did you inform them of your condition when hired?
That might help you.
You should:
1) Consult and attorney
2) Consult a therapist (best strategy)
3) Prepare to find another job.
If this is a large corporation, they probably won't fire you. However, they can move you or demote you to a job which does not involve travel. Staff meetings a few hours distant would not reasonably be considered a hardship. Eventually, you will be marginalized and left with no option but to resign.
A smaller company will have more flexibility and could indeed fire you.
To be fair, is what they are asking unreasonable, under normal circumstances? You have the responsibility to do everything possible to be able to perform your job duties.
For example, I once had a colleague who had a phobia of flying. She used her vacation time to drive to meetings, even crossing the entire country! She fulfilled her responsibilities, even at personal cost. Note that a therapist would have been cheaper and less exhausting. |

Suck it up and go to the meetings. A business is to make money and if you're holding people back from making money you might as well be let go. |

i suffer from panick attacks as well but i never let them stand in the way of things that are important and i think this meeting with the doctor is important perhaps the company doctor and your boss are just looking out for you.
Just relax when you go to the appointment, take a friend with you to keep you company so that you don't have panick attacks as often.
Good Luck! |

Hi, sorry to hear you are feeling so bad. I don't know enough about US law to comment - a US mental health charity might be able to give you some free advice. I would really recommend you do try Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. It works a treat for panic attacks.
The following steps will eliminate (or at least significantly reduce) your panic attacks in the short and long term:
1.Breathe properly - if you control your breathing, you control panic. As soon as you notice the signs of anxiety, check your breathing: breathe in slowly through your nose pushing your tummy out (to the count of 5 or so). Breathe out slowly and for a bit longer (to the count of 7 or so) through your mouth. Do not breathe rapidly or shallowly (in the chest area). This will soon restore the balance of oxygen and you will feel a lot better.
2. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy! CBT is proven to be the most effective thing for panic attacks, OCD and anxiety etc. It takes a bit of work, but it is super effective. (After 15 years of panic attacks, mine stopped completely). You can take a course for free online at: www.livinglifetothefull.com It has been funded by NHS Scotland and has had great results thus far.
3. Try relaxation exercise tapes (progressive muscular relaxation). They really help if you practise often enough. This site has instructions on how to do it without the tapes (and other useful info): http://www.cci.health.wa.gov.au/resources/minipax.cfm?mini_ID=23
With each step practise makes perfect. (i.e. practise the steps every day, not just when you are feeling bad). I hope you feel better soon. Best of luck! |

I don't think they should fire you, but that's not saying they won't. You have your years of being there and that's a help. I think you might do two things:
1) Go to your doctor and get a prescription for your panic attacks. Then ask the doctor to write a letter to your company saying that you are on a prescription for panic attacks. This may help.
2) Ask your boss if you do a good job and if they are happy with your performance. Tell them that you are happy to work there and do not want to lose your job but you are worried about missing the meetings. Maybe you can give him or her some information on panic attacks so they will understand better what it would do to you if you traveled far away.
Panic attacks are serious and scary. I have had only one or two, thank goodness. I feel for you. Good luck! |
