Shanghai Joe | Can you buy an ocean? |
Additional Details Think of the money you would make from countries using it....and all the fish you'd own.

Since the ocean isn't owned by anyone there is no one to buy it from, however, if you had enough money, you could suggest to all countries that border it that you would like to pay a huge sum for them to acknowledge your ownership. If every country agreed to accept the money then a deed would be issued and you would own it. But the deal would probably give the countries the right to use the ocean for a period of time, probably at least 99 years. And, while you may own it, the deal might not allow you to sell it so it could revert to the countries upon your death. The probability of anyone having enough money to entice the countries to accept the deal would seem to be very low, but nothing is impossible unless it violates a law of nature. The maintenance of your ownership would depend on the countries all standing by the deal. Of course, that is true of any land you buy. Governments have the power of eminent domain so they can choose to take property. |

You could if one was for sale, but where would you keep it? |

I could sell the atlantic ocean to you for 5 million, it will be yours. I can get my lawyer to draw up the papers.
Remember one more thing, there are a lot of tresspassers, fishes, tortoises, sharks, you will have to take care of them.
On top of this, there are a lot of weed, undergrowth, once again it is your responsibility.
But there are a lot of benefits, you wont ever have water shortage problems, you could travel from places to places without paying, if you decide you can make the tresspassers your lunch and dinner etc.
Think about it, and let me know. |

umm..no, sorry but no. |

No - however you could try buying an Island and declaring independence. If you get recognised by the UN, you would then be an independent (sovereign) nation ..
.. and since sovereign nations claim ownership out to 200 miles from their coast (or to the edge of their continental shelf, if further), you will now own part of the ocean. |

i dont think so. Youd have to discuss it with all the countries it coms to contact with. |

In one sense, yes. You can buy waterfront property, and have protected usage rights for one part of that ocean. That's the best you could do, though. |

Not for full, but a piece, like a island and some water around it. |

No. And also, if you could, then every time someone died rather because of drowning or because of a shark attack or something, they'd blame and sue you. |

No, it is shared by every land it touches. Though a country can have certain regulations and territorial waters, it cannot "own" any ocean.
Also, you would only own the fish until it swims into someone elses water! The USA owns all the birds that are currently nesting the US, until they migrate. |
