Can you have a minus percantage?
doing some work on financial accounts and iv worked out the return on capital employed, but the answer has come out negative. Is this possible or has something gone wrong?

Thanks

either there was an error in your math or the business lost money. You can get a negative percentage. Say a business sold $14,000 of equipment one year but then the next year they only sell $7,000 their sales are down 50%

Sounds like what has happened with the world, they call it the credit crunch.

Amy
it's just that damn economy again

I mean, honestly, we'd have to see your work to know if you did something wrong. It's possible to GAIN negative percentages and lose positive ones, you see? It's a matter of perspective.

Yes you can.
For instance if you want to find the percentage profit on an item.
The item costs 100 and is sold for 90 then the percentage profit is minus10% (or whatever)

good question. i believe it can happen.

Roske
I think you can say that your capital decreased by 5% but you cant have a minus sign such as -5%.

I'm not exactly sure though.

chardynigelon
its possible

when a company has a loss, usually depicted as (2000) or -2000, that can still be regarded as a return on capital except its other way round.

Dividing this negative number by postive captial gives you voila a negative percentage

Its all ok

It is indeed possible to have a negative return on capital employed.

Geoff the skier
It's possible.

JMoneyMilf
It can happen, but it's totally dependent upon the situation. If you keep getting this answer, it may be true.

quizzard123
Yes, that is possible. It means for every dollar invested, you LOST a certain percentage of income.

It's not a good sign for the business, but it's very possible.

yo momma
yeah, well at our school, it's if you get every question wrong and you dont put your name like minus one or two for not putting your name.

Well as the return on capital is the profit made, if you made no profit and just broke even, there would be a zero return. Presumably if you are correctly showing a negative return it means you are trading at a loss. That is purely a laymans suggestion though.

You can.

Dane
if you were doing a income statement it definatly could have been you divided your revenue from capital, instead of vice versa

Matt

its possible. anythings really possible, except #/0 or x=x+or-#

GAZZZ
Yeah, if its on a balance sheet, minus figures usually go into brackets to avoid mistakes. That's how im taught anyway =)

Sure. I had $500 worth of stock that's now worth $250. The change in my account this year is negative 50 percent.
