Can you please tell me what a VAT is and how much is it worth.?

VAT stands for Value added Tax. It is a tax which is applied to almost everything.

There are 3 VAT categories.

1. Zero Rated: There is no vat chargabe. This is normally food, medication, childrens & baby items.

2. Reduced Rate: This is 5% and is applied to things like your landline phone bill and insurance policies.

3. Standard Rate this is 17.5% and i applied to goods and services sold by a VAT registered company. Companies are legally obliged to register for VAT when their turnover comes up to or exceeds ÂŁ67,000 in any tax year.

There are other things which are VAT excempt.

Adapting properties for the disabled.
Construction of Residential properties.

If you yourself are vat registered you can reclaim all VAT you pay on aqusitions of taxible supplies

have a look at the hmrc website

Value Added Tax.

You pay income tax on what you earn, then pay VAT on whats left when you spend it. Good, huh?

Ali
VAT is value-added tax. It's added on the normal price of something by companies who either choose to be registered, or those who's business income is above a certain amount each year and then it is compulsory.

It means that they collect the tax on behalf of the government by adding it on the price of stuff you buy from them. Additionally, they can claim back from the government any VAT that they have been charged by their suppliers. Because of this, the only person who genuinely bears the full cost of VAT is the end user, i.e. you and me. They pay the net tax (the amounts they collected selling stuff less the VAT they were charged when buying stuff) to the government every three months.

There are a few things where VAT doesn't get added on, usually basic foodstuffs, children's clothing, postal services etc.

VAT in the UK is currently 17.5% for MOST things (there are a few exceptions), but the rate also varies from country to country.

VAT: That part of the price a business leaves off to make you think their price is better than anyone else's, before adding it back on when they send the bill.

it's Value Added Tax, VAT currently 17.5% (until labour really kick in lol), not everything is subject to it, just the things you have to buy the most Mmmm

to convert an ex-vat figure to an inc vat figure x1.175, and vice versa /1.175

hope that helps

it's one of those things that just winds you up when you know about it.

VAT is 17.5% on certain goods sold in the UK. Nappies and childrens items do not have the full amount of vat on it. There are other items too. You also do not have to pay VAT on certain items if you are registered disabled.

Value Added Tax as it is called, was in place of the old Purchase Tax, but vat was put on more items than the old tax.
Another way to scam more money from the public.
Vat is 17.5% and is now on virtually everything we buy, while the old tax was only on luxury items. One thing I cannot understand is the vat at an auction. Why do we pay vat on both buying and selling goods, they are not new and should be free of tax.
