It used to be solely by people grassing each other up. The TV adverts about two years ago showed that incentives were given, usually as rewards to grassers.
Nowadays with the onset of technology they can check themselves. The DWP and other government services like NI and Inland Revenue have all teamed up and share your information. Basically if you have signed up to recieve benefits, they can check with the inland revenue and your NI to see if you have a job, and are already earning more than you should. Whats more, is that the powerful computer systems which they are in the process of implementing over the last few years/months have the power to do this automatically and spit out a database full of names of people who commit fraud and what type of fraud! |

I have reported some eastern Europeans that i know are definitely receiving benefits. They are earning over a £1000 a week each fitting hardwood flooring for a shop in Richmond. They brag about it they have new 4x4 cars and live in council houses fully paid for by housing benefit. They actually own 2 flats which they rent out to other eastern Europeans like 10 in a flat.I reported them and the shop owner ( because he pays them in cash and knows they are shrewing the system) over a year ago and again quite recently. I was told last time i reported them that not every case is investigated because they have very view investigators but as now its the second report they will be more likely to act on the report. So basically its a lottery who they investigate or not. The reason I reported them was because they are seriously taking the piss out of the system and they have priced me out of the market by working for half my rate and bodging the work. They can afford to price me out because they have no overheads pay no tax and receive every benefit going |

Mainly I think they do rely on people informing on other people, but I'm sure they do occasionally investigate people who have suspicious amounts of claims. |

claims get revised, and agents go to homes to check, they also have agents watching people who they think might be making a fraudulent claim....you would be quite shocked at how many relatives actually grass on one another, so they dont need much help from the public |

A lot of neighbours are grassing them up.this means you have to be nice to everyone if you are fiddling. But it is simple to catch them, none of them are very bright or they would,nt do it.The penalties for getting caught make the fiddling a stupid thing to do,as many people are finding out.The only thing that restricts the numbers being caught is lack of investigators. |

They do have inspectors, but sadly not enough. I believe is is up to other citizens to expose fraudsters. After all they are not just robbing the goverment, the money comes out of our pockets [working or not]. |

Some allegations come through because computer systems cross check each other but many allegations do come in from the public-often fed up neighbours, ex partners or someone from the pub who's just sick of the 'cheat' boasting about it.
Any discrepencies on forms you fill in if you're claiming are also checked and the staff in local job centres are all required to report anything suspicious (like the works van parked outside while you sign on for example)-or the fact you've got 3 kids by Fred but he never lives with you!?
The local Post Office help prevent massive amounts of fraud when paying out monies-although the enforced bank payments have helped massively with giro fraud (one person cashing it & then the owner claiming it's lost or stolen).
The real fact of the matter is that the Govt, in it's infinite wisdom has decided that there really isn't a massive fraud problem any more and has not only reduced manpower but put working practices in place that make it almost impossible for the Fraud Investigator to do their job in the efficient manner that (most) of them used to.
If you'd seen and heard half of what you see and hear in a Fraud dept you'd be amazed at what goes on (and the people that cheat!!) and at how hard these guys and gals work despite their hands being tied behind their backs, believe me ;-) |

well these days the job centre have the powers to look into things such as your tax..... bank accounts etc. also they can check such things as utility bills almost anything really. but mainly they do relay on people grassing on them so to speak. i personally think its quite dirty. |

Probably the DWP has so much work to cope with and not enough resource that it relies on people to grass on the benefit cheats.
As long as they are found out, it doesn't really matter how it was discovered. However, there should be better ways to prevent fraudulent claims being made in the first place. |

My Dad used to work for the DWP and he told me that they had people who would use undercover survailance to see if they had jobs or were claiming with different names at different places and people who would go out and get them. |
