linda | Coworker keeps telling me how to do my job. How can I get him to stop? |
He's not my boss, just a colleague in the office. He always has suggestions about how to do certain things. Like today, I sent a call for my boss to his voicemail after asking if the caller if he would like it. The colleague happened to walk by and then puts his 2 cents in and says, "why don't you take messages? I call lots of places and they always give you an option of leaving a message or leaving a voicemail." We just implanted a new voicemail system and it works great, no complaints from anyone in the office since we used to NOT have one for years and taking messages was a pain. I do occasionally take messages for my boss if they are pertaining to something really important and have the caller leave voicemail as well, or, if I see that both of his phone lines are busy. My boss has never once complained about this. Short of ignoring my colleague, what should I do? He is very nice, but this affects me and my work because I feel like I never do a good enough job. |

Regarding the voice mail comment-
Tell your colleague "I appreciate you suggestion, however I believe Mr. "So & So" prefers to have his calls sent to voice mail, so that he can get a more complete message from the caller"
This type of reponse can be used for most comments. Just tell him that you appreciate his suggestion and then explain that you are doing "what-ever" the way you believe the boss prefers to have it done.
Have a great day. |

I love Jonny's answer. My answer would be this: in a pleasant manner, with a smile simply say, "Until I have been instructed to report to you, I shall continue doing my job to the satisfaction of my boss." |

catch him after work and tell him, " you Black foster brother is getting out of prison for murder, and he's very protective of you. He refuses to take his anger management classes, and wants to visit you at the job." |

I suggest you tell you're colleague that you have a handle on the situation and when you need his help you will ask him for it. This really isn't anything to complain to your supervisor about unless this person oversteps their bounds and actually interferes with you. This person is obviously a nosy body or trying to make himself look good to the higher ups. You need to try to ignore them and put them in their place when necessary in a professional manner. If it 's something that you were given a directive to do or have already discussed with your boss just tell him "John, I am doing this how Bill has asked me to" and leave it at that, no other explanation is needed. Eventually he will get the hint or sometime in the future your boss will hear him and tell him to knock it off. |

You can handle it one of a few ways, but you may be better to tell him tactfully (but firmly) how you feel when he chips in, he may not realise he's upsetting your confidence. Don't be nasty, just be honest and fair in what you say and how you say it. There's no point in causing bad feeling. He may be insecure and feels he has to tell people what to do all day, I guess its the way some people are.
You could thank him for his advice, say that you appreciate what he's saying, but you've got it under control.
You could also ask you boss if he's happy with you and your performance because at the end of the day its their opinion that matters.
In either case, you'll have to be brave and patient and believe that you're doing a great job. |

Well then stop feeling that way. You control your feelings and you don't have to let this guy get to you! You weren't hired to please him so forget about him. Say something smart as s back to him! Quit playing the victim, you sound like you're afraid of him. When he asked you that all you had to say is something like, Why don't you quit asking so many questions? |

tell him that you appreciate his advice and will take it into consideration but say to him that your current method of doing thing does accomplish the goal without complaints. and if there is complaints, you and your boss can discuss the proper course of remediating the situation. |

Ignore him, he is stupid. He just wants a reaction from you and if you give it to him, he will do it more. |

Next time he does this. simply tell him in a calm stern voice. You got the job you have now for a reason. If he doesn't like how you do things he can take it up with your boss. |
