Credit cards good invention or bad??

Good, surely. They are only bad if you can't borrow money sensibly.

I don't understand how you can blame lenders for letting you have the ability to borrow money. The terms and conditions are as clear as they need to be.

It is a bit snobish to suggest they are a bad idea because they encourage people to go into debt. Surely most people are sensible enough to know what they are doing?

The economy has benefited massively from the availability of credit.

As we have seen it's not always good!

We wouldn't be such a rich country if we didn't have credit cards.

I think they are good. Promotes jumps in a new industry. The only bad thing is that fact that people cant control their spending. That doesnt relate back to credit cards as people do it with checks too (Bouncing checks ;o) )

Nacho
I think they are great.

Danny
They are great - but should come with a wealth warning.

The problem is not really the people doing the borrowing, but the lenders making credit available to people who really can't afford to borrow.

When I was 19, earning just £12,000 pa, I had a credit limit on my combined cards of £15,000. That can't be clever can it?

Lancez
Good invention

They are both. It depends from what point of view you look at it.

From a bank's point of view, they make a lot money from them, with little risk.

From the merchant's point of view, they lose a percentage on each transaction (sometimes up to 5% with American Express, which is why a lot of merchants don't take them). But they are fairly sure of being paid if they check the signature or PIN code.

From the cardholder's viewpoint, they pay more for what they buy generally, because the merchant will put up the price to pay the credit card company. They usually pay for the privilege of having the card. They have the risk of their card being used fraudulently and at the end, they pay well over the odds for any credit interest due.

Make your own mind up.

Brittany
both because you can charge what ever you want but then you have to pay the bill

daddio
for the average person, HORRIBLE.

for people that KNOW how to use one, they can be a tremendous tool.

They come in handy when you are trying to build credit and in case of an emergency. But you don't want to abuse it.
