Did you pick your college major based on your interests? Ten points to best answer!?
i'm wondering how people chose or are going to choose their major. i don't have any interest in anything whatsoever, so it would be helpful to know what other people did or are going to do. i'm kind of thinking about majoring in business because of job security, but i don't think its where my heart is at. i have absolutely no idea!!!

Also, i'd love to know what kind of major you have and what your future goals are!

I chose a Bachelor of Psychology mainly due to the part that I have a profound interest in psychology and I embrace it as a vocation. However, before I made a firm decision, I researched what area of psychology I wanted to specialise in, what the university degree entailed, the number of years the degree is (6 minimum), and the average salary for a clinical psychologist.

For me, psychology is a better field than most as we deal with people day to day, as opposed to any other field of study, and psychology is all about the study of people.

Many of my friends and people from all walks of life have told me (and I realised this very much during high school) that you have to do something you enjoy doing. I know several people who didn't give much thought and entered a degree they thought would be useful, but it turned out all the money, effort and time gone into the degree went to waste due to a realisation that it is not their vocation.

I advise giving a conscious deep seated thought about what your life goals are, instead of where your academic interests lie, and the financial income if you decide to go down a certain career path. Some people's priorities are money, and many people miserably fail university with money as their main motive.

Make a life plan first, then decide on a career path. Trust me, you will thank yourself later for choosing the right degree. When choosing the degree that you think is right for you, it is important to actually invest the time to research MANY degrees and what each degree entails (why I wrote the first paragraph).

Yes, because obviously you don't want to make a career out of something you don't enjoy doing.
Anything in the health field offers job security. My major is in physical therapy.

Roll the dice. Pay the price. ⚀⚀
I never could decide on a major. However, I did pick the college I attended based on the high female to male ratio. College is about setting priorities.

yeah, but then i found out my small business entreprenuer instructor worked as an employee at General Motors and also quickly came to learn she has no entreprenuer experience and knew absolutely nothing about business.
Finding out she taught most of the Small Business courses, i dropped out of the college, and am currently at a community college taking business law with someone who is currently an attorney. It's a heck of a lot cheaper too.

Your major should be something that interest you since you (more than likely) will have to do it on a daily basis. If you dont have any interests in particular you can try volunteering with different things or maybe interning to find out what you like.

Yes. I'm majoring in history, history has been my lifelong passion. :)
I aspire to be a world-class historian someday.
Hope I helped!

I picked my major to help with my passion, rather than doing a major IN my passion: I did German (with minors in Political Science, History and European Cinema), as my love is German history and politics and fluent German is a BIG help to research that. That enabled me to do my MA in European Politics and History, which in turn let me start doctoral research into modern East German history...

EDIT
AS wyndorf says below, taking some time out in the real world can help you get things into perspective. I did 3 years in hotels before I was ready to go off to uni. It taught me that I never wanted to work that far down the food chain again, that hard work is good for you and that I was going to be able to cope with academic life, because I had coped well with something much more alien to me.

That is why I don't really understand why ppl go to college so soon. Take a few years and travel, or live your life, get a job in the city and an apt with some friends, find out who you are. Going to college and getting a major in Journalism is not going to get you a job, or an Art History major. If you get a Business degree even though your not into it, well, you just wasted a lot of your parents $ and your time.
I started working as a nurses aid after High School, and then moved to WA and worked in retail, I lived in CA and worked retail, then @ 21 y/o I went to college to become a nurse, because I knew that it was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, it was the most satisfying experience I had for the 2 years I worked as a NA.
Discover what you want to do, volunteer @ places, maybe work in the kind of business you want to get into, retail, restaurant etc. You won't be the owner or the Assistant Manager, but you will have a better idea of how a business is run, even if your just the grunt.

Based on how competitive the program is, how well you did in high school, and based on what you are going to be doing in the future.

In my case, I'm going to be taking psychology because I didn't really get good grades, and I know that I have an interest in studying the brain.

I suggest you might want to take the career test on www.myroad.com
It might give you some options. But then again, you might want to consider your GPA as well.
