Interesting question! Quite possibly--In "the prince" by machiavelli, he objects to ruling with love, as the subjects hold the power, as they can regulate the amount of love they give.
However, in your scenario, with an iron fist, the ruler holds onto the power and thusly, controls them.
In fact, I had a job whereas I felt as if I had been beaten regularly--I worked harder (selling more--making the boss more money)Emotionally sick as it was, I kept it for about five years too many as I was making so much money. |

Some do, some don't. The ones who do perform better are scared witless of more beatings so they work like the devil to avoid the abuse. Those who don't, couldn't give a hoot about the job to begin with and get extremely annoyed when beating. |
