Do we still need 1p and 2p coins?

No, you do not need them.
I live in the Netherlands where we stopped to have one cent pieces, the smallest coin being 5 cents for a couple of years before changing to the Euro.
With the Euro we did get 1 and 2 cent pieces, but after a short time we stopped using those again.
The prices are still expressed in one cent amounts, like 0,59 or 14.99.
When all prices are added, the total is rounded to the nearest multiple of 5 cents, so 1 and 2 down to 0, and 3 and 4 up to 5, 6 and 7 down to 5 and 8 and 9 up to 10, and so on.

After a long day in the supermarket, the difference in the till is no more than 5 euro, most days the difference is less than 1 euro, so you can imagine that most people will not notice anything at all, unless they work at it. You can pay with plastic, in which case you will pay the real number, or you can buy more items to change the number of cents, but when you have more than a few items it is not really worth it.
And how many items did you buy this year that were so cheap that 2 penny difference (up or down,) would keep you from buying them?

Yes, and to an extent now isn't the time to be getting rid if them.

Think of every single product in the UK that has a price on it of 9p, 27p, 49p, £4.99, £19.99, etc (miilions and millions of them) and then just imagine you take away that loose change.
Every shop owner and retailer will round that price up especially on the smaller items where the profit is tight.

Your sudddenly going to have a rise in price of the goods we buy which effectively is/will push up inflation.

I can see what your thinking here but in the financial mess we have right now the last thing we need is to make things worse.

yes! for the good old 1p and 2p sweets :)

damn i wish they still sold them :(

manxbiker
Yes we do because if we get rid of them prices will go up even more instead of 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 p at a time they will go up by a minimum of 5 P a time

yeah we do, I save them up in a big bottle , out of sight out of mind , then one day i think I need money , so i empty the bottle out and put it in a bag,,,

then go to a coinstar machine ( tescos have them) then change them all in a instant and a small price to pay. out comes a reciept then change it to real pounds

then you can buy whatever you can afford . but they do have thier uses on a day when you dont have money.

think about the gambling machine dens , they have 1 and 2p machines you put in a 2p and it joins all the other 2ps to push down the prize.. all good fun really

Vicky T Viking
Probably not. They did away with 1 and 2c coins in Australia and the prices just get rounded up

Bella
no not really. you can buy 1p and 2p sweets in some places, but not often.
and dont forget most expensive items we buy are - £_.99. like £99.99. so the 1p is still needed for these.
but i think we could quite easily get rid of the 1p - its not really needed.

I don't think we do no.
Its impossible to buy anything for 1 or 2 pence anymore.

not even penny sweets.
