I spent several months in western Germany. My german is basic, but I picked it up when I was there. Over there, they start learning English at an early age. Most residents can speak fluent English. The only times you have problems is when you are talking to older citizens. It helps to learn basic travel language, which you can pick up in a dictionary, or you might find yourself in the wrong bathroom!! :) |

Well it really depends. There are troops and their families living there and they don't know German. If you have a job lined up that doesn't require you to know the language I see no reason why you couldn't move over there and just pick up the language as needed. |

No, you don't. However, the Germans I have encountered in their own country are very offended if you don't make an effort to learn their language. |

Is there still a West Germany? I think German knowledge would be helpful, but many Germans speak English and there are English speaking communities around US military bases. |

it would help but not neccesary english is a required lang. in germany and with the us military stationed there it is spoken frequently
my father in law lives there for 3 years and he dont speak german other than the lil bit he has picked up |

It's not absolutely necessary, but it's very useful. Germans, for the most part, speak some English, and many are very willing to speak it with native English speakers in order to improve their skills.
However, reading signs, maps, and so on may prove to be difficult, as these are not typically bilingual.
Moving to Germany without speaking a word of German would be difficult, but much less difficult than for a German who doesn't speak a word of English moving the the United States, for example.
So, don't let it stop you, but do plan on learning the language as quickly as you can once there. |
